FEDERAL FIRE SERVICE PARTICIPATES IN NATIONAL DISASTER RISK REDUCTION WORKSHOP
The Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, S.A. Olumode, FCNA, ACTI, represented by Controller M.S. Anas, joined stakeholders at a one-day validation workshop on the draft National Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction (2025–2030) held in Abuja on Tuesday, 19th August 2025. The event, organized by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in collaboration with the African Union Commission and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) under the Sahel Resilience Project, brought together government, civil society, academia, and development partners to refine Nigeria’s disaster resilience roadmap.
In her address, NEMA Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, represented by Dr. Ishaya Chonoko, stressed that Nigeria faces growing threats from natural hazards, pandemics, and climate change, which endanger lives, property, and national development. She explained that the new strategy and action plan aim to shift disaster management from reactive responses to proactive, preventive measures strengthening institutions, enhancing early warning systems, and promoting community-based resilience. UNDP Resident Representative, Ms. Elsie Attafuah, described the strategy as “a blueprint for action,” revealing that more than 45,000 disaster incidents across 23 hazards have been documented nationwide.
At the close of the workshop, stakeholders including the National Space Research & Development Agency (NASRDA) reaffirmed their commitment to collaboration, data sharing, and evidence-based decision-making. The Federal Fire Service pledged continued partnership in building a safer and more resilient Nigeria in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
