DEFINING BLINDNESS
Preventable Blindness
=====================================
This is an eye defect resulting in total or partial loss of sight (vision), due lack of adequate treatment or access to effective eye care. It is the blindness, or loss of vision that could have been completely prevented by administration or institution of adequate preventive and prophylactic treatment measures.
Examples of Preventable Causes of Blindness includes (but not limited to);
1. Glaucoma
2. Cataract
3. Retinopathies
4. Refractive Erors (High Powe, Longstanding Uncorrected Errors)
5. Corneal Diseases
6. Chemical and Radiational Injuries
7. Eye infections (Trachoma)
8. Vitamin Deficiency (Xerophthalmia)
Avoidable Blindness

The sum of preventable and curable Blindness is often referred to as avoidable blindness. About 80℅ of blindness in our country is available.
