DEFINING BLINDNESS

Preventable Blindness
=====================================
This is an eye defect resulting in total or partial loss of sight (vision), due lack of adequate treatment or access to effective eye care. It is the blindness, or loss of vision that could have been completely prevented by administration or institution of adequate preventive and prophylactic treatment measures.

Examples of Preventable Causes of Blindness includes (but not limited to);

1. Glaucoma
2. Cataract
3. Retinopathies
4. Refractive Erors (High Powe, Longstanding Uncorrected Errors)
5. Corneal Diseases
6. Chemical and Radiational Injuries
7. Eye infections (Trachoma)
8. Vitamin Deficiency (Xerophthalmia)

Avoidable Blindness

The sum of preventable and curable Blindness is often referred to as avoidable blindness. About 80℅ of blindness in our country is available.

YOU SHOULD HEAR THIS..

Starting at around age 40, you may notice blurry close-up vision. This is called presbyopia and it's fairly common.

You may require reading glasses.

Blurry vision sometimes signals a more serious eye condition such as macular degeneration.

Pay close attention to worsening symptoms and get regular eye screenings by an Eye Doctor.

Many eye problems begin without any symptoms. Regular eye exams can help you catch problems before it’s too late.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends adults get a baseline eye exam at age 40 or possibly sooner based on symptoms and family history.

Then follow your doctor's recommendation after that.

To a large extent, blindness has ravaged a lot of people irrespective of gender, especially in the rural areas, depriving them of the beauties of life.

The eyes are the most treasured sense and the light of the body, it is also the window to the world therefore we must keep it healthy.

Where some people can afford their treatment and for their households, some people in rural areas cannot and that is why Optimum healthcare came into existence.

The sole goal of this healthcare initiative is to reduce the prevalence of avoidable blindness, visual impairment and other health challenges that pose a threat to humanity most especially the poorest of the poor.

To ensure healthy living and promote good sights for all at any age".

To reach out to the less privileged and people in interior villages with adequate drugs, supplies and treatments.

To reach out to millions of Nigerians who cannot afford adequate treatment for curable eye conditions.

In fulfilment of these goals, Optimum healthcare has countlessly flagged off grassroots eye medical outreach, targeting school children, villages, aged people, poor and physically challenged people.

The founder, Dr. Onyedeke Munachi David has flagged off a free grassroots eye medical outreach for residents of Kwarra state, Naija state, Imo state e.t.c just to mention but a few.

The outreach which is in conjunction with Restore Sight Africa Initiative is expected to continue throughout the ten federal constituencies across the state in order to eradicate blindness and other eye challenges, especially among children and aged people.
