Understanding Hypotension (Low Blood Pressure)
What is Hypotension?
Hypotension is when your blood pressure falls below the normal range, typically less than 90/60 mmHg. While not always dangerous, it can cause symptoms and signal underlying issues.
Common Symptoms:
* Dizziness or lightheadedness
* Fainting
* Blurred vision
* Fatigue
* Nausea
* Cold, clammy skin
Possible Causes:
* Dehydration
* Heart problems (e.g., bradycardia, heart failure)
* Endocrine issues (e.g., thyroid disorders)
* Severe infection (septicemia)
* Blood loss
* Certain medications (e.g., for high blood pressure or depression)
Types of Hypotension:
1. Orthostatic Hypotension – Drops when standing up suddenly
2. Postprandial Hypotension – Drops after eating
3. Neurally Mediated Hypotension – Triggered by stress or standing for long periods
4. Severe Hypotension – Related to shock or organ failure; a medical emergency
How It’s Managed:
* Drinking more fluids
* Wearing compression stockings
* Eating small, frequent meals
* Adjusting medications
* Treating the root cause
When to Seek Help:
If you experience frequent fainting, confusion, or signs of shock (cold skin, rapid breathing), seek immediate medical attention.
Low blood pressure isn’t always a concern, but when symptoms appear, early evaluation can prevent complications.
