What is tuberculosis?
Tuberculosis is an airborne disease caused by microbacterium tuberculosis which infect lung,skin, tissue and bone.
Tuberculosis is one of the deadliest disease which kills within a short period of time if not diagnosed and treated early.
Tuberculosis can be cured by antibiotics specifically sensitive to it and produced for it.
Tuberculosis is not a death sentence but should be given more attention.
Tuberculosis is contagious and infectious and can be transmitted by air making it more dangerous than HIV/AIDS. So, you need to protect yourself from anyone exhibiting sign and symptoms of tuberculosis (T.B)
Sign and symptoms of tuberculosis
1. Persistent cough with bloody sputum
2. Sweating at night
3. Loss of weight
4. Weakness
5. Difficulty in breathing,etc
Mode of transmission.
Tuberculosis is transmitted through air making it airborne disease. When an infected individual (person) with tuberculosis coughs he/she releases about 5000 bacilli (bacteria) into air moving around and if anyone around that vicinity come inhale or exchanges gases through breathing he/she picks up the bacilli into his/her respiratory tract where they settles,multiplies and infects lungs and may spread to skin, tissue and bone by extension.
Diagnosis.
Tuberculosis is diagnosed in the clinical laboratory setting by a well trained Medical Laboratory practitioner (personnel) either Scientist or Technician. A tuberculosis patient is expected to produce sputum specimen for AFB test,genexpert (PCR) .
Treatment
Tuberculosis is treatable and it's treated with antibiotics.
National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme is the agency responsible for the eradication and control of tuberculosis in Nigeria.
Tuberculosis treatment is free in Government owned Medical/Health institutions in Nigeria.
