The Total Knee Arthroplasty was done at our Gwarimpa center. The patient is a middle aged lady who presented with significant pain and a valgus deformity of the right knee caused by severe osteoarthritis. The surgery did two things: removed the pain and corrected the deformity.

We’re grateful to share the story of a remarkable 95-year-old woman who recently underwent a successful hemiarthroplasty surgery at Bimma Hospital.

She came to us with a fractured hip and limited mobility. Thanks to the expertise of our orthopedic team and the grace of God, she’s now on the path to recovery — walking again with strength and courage.

👉 What is a Hemiarthroplasty?
It’s a surgical procedure that replaces the broken part of the hip joint (usually the femoral head) with an artificial implant. It’s commonly done in elderly patients to restore mobility after a hip fracture.

Bone defects are often sequelae of high-energy impact or trauma, tumor resection, infection, or revision surgery. Because intrinsic bone healing is impaired, the risk of a nonunion is as high as 46% in cases with extensive soft tissue and vascular damage.

Large bone defect resulting from musculoskeletal tumours, infections or trauma represent a tissue deficit unable to heal spontaneously.

Critical-sized bone defects are those that will not heal spontaneously within a patient's lifetime.

Intra-bony defect is a specific osseous defect with definite morphology. It is surrounded by bony walls on three sides with the tooth root forming the fourth wall.

Surgical management aims to reconstruct defects, avoiding amputation and providing acceptable functional outcomes.
