WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF HIV IN CHILDREN?
1. VERTICAL TRANSMISSION
A child may be born with HIV or acquire it soon after delivery. This form of transmission is known as Vertical Transmission or Perinatal Transmission .
HIV can be transmitted in any of these three stages.
A. During Gestation (passing from mother to baby through the placenta)
B. During Delivery ( through the transfer of blood or other fluids)
C. While breastfeeding .
Remember that not everyone will pass HIV to their baby . Worldwide the rate of transmitting the HIV virus during pregnancy has reduced to about 5 percent. Now there is a cure.
