Earlier this week, our Communications Manager, was at CHRICED Radio and TV speaking on one of the most urgent issues of our time, mental health among Nigerian youth.
In a country where stigma still silences many, she opened up a needed conversation on what mental health really is, how mental illness shows up in different forms, and why seeking help is not a sign of weakness but a necessary step toward healing.
She addressed important questions and shared statistics that reveal a hard truth: Nigeria’s mental health system is still out of reach for many. With few psychologists available, the need for accessible, community-based support has never been more urgent.
That’s why and .mma are doing things differently. We've built a practical model that trains lay counselors within communities and primary health centers. These individuals provide basic mental health assessments, listen without judgment, and connect those in need with professional care. It's not a theory, it's working, and it's scalable.
The conversation also explored the role of social media, not just as a platform for trends, but as a powerful tool to shift narratives, drive awareness, and build safe spaces for young people to speak and be heard.
Mental health is not a luxury. It is a right.
The time to act is now.
We’re calling on partners, funders, and changemakers who believe in community-based solutions to join us. Let’s work together to expand access, train more counselors, and build a stronger, more resilient society.
