FMC Abuja Hosts Research Capacity Strengthening Workshop for Healthcare Workers

The Federal Medical Centre Abuja, in partnership with The Global Health Network Nigeria, today 8th August 2025 held a 1-Day research capacity building workshop for healthcare workers in the Hospital. According to the team, the workshop aims to support research leadership through the uptake and implementation of capacity strengthening and data science initiatives and addressing the inequity in research, specifically in terms of where research happens, who leads, and who benefits. By bringing together healthcare workers and renowned experts in the field, the workshop provided a platform for resourceful deliberation and knowledge sharing.

The workshop featured invited speakers led by Prof. Trudie Lang, Director of the Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health at the University of Oxford, London, and Dr. Kome Otokunefor. These experts shared their insights and expertise, providing participants with a broad understanding of research capacity strengthening and its importance in healthcare.

The Medical Director of FMC Abuja, Prof. Saad Ahmed, who was ably represented by the Head of Clinical Services, Dr. Bioku Muftau, who welcomed participants to the workshop. Dr. Muftau urged participants to be open to the knowledge that would be shared during the workshop, emphasizing the importance of research in the hospital's core mandate of providing quality healthcare services to Nigerians.

The Medical Director through Dr Bioku Muftau expressed his appreciation to The Global Health Network Nigeria for their partnership in organizing the workshop.

The research capacity strengthening workshop led by Dr. Abiodun Olugbenga Deputy Head of Clinical Services Research and Training with other support staff was a significant initiative by FMC Abuja and The Global Health Network Nigeria to promote research and capacity building among healthcare workers. By providing a platform for knowledge sharing and deliberation, the workshop aimed to enhance the research capacity of healthcare workers in the hospital, ultimately contributing to the provision of quality healthcare services to Nigerians.

FMC Abuja Hosts 2-Day Emergency Services Workshop to Enhance Patient Care

The Federal Medical Centre Abuja today 6th of August 2025 organized a 2-day workshop and practical training on emergency services as part of its commitment for continuous improvement of healthcare services and patient satisfaction in the facility.The training brought together emergency staff, including doctors, nurses, and health attendants, to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge to provide quality emergency care.

The workshop featured a resource speaker from the United Kingdom, Dr. Tunde Ashaolu, a Consultant Emergency Physician, who emphasized the critical role of time in emergency care. Dr. Ashaolu stressed that timely intervention is crucial in emergency situations, and healthcare professionals must be able to think and act quickly to save lives.

The workshop included practical training sessions, question-and-answer sessions, and interactive discussions focusing on core clinical skills, teamwork, and transport. These sessions were designed to enhance the participants' knowledge and skills in emergency care, enabling them to provide more effective and efficient services.

In his welcome address, Dr. Bioku Muftau, Head of Clinical Services, who represented the Medical Director, Prof. Saad Ahmed, urged the participants to fully engage with the training and apply the knowledge and skills acquired to improve quality healthcare services at the Emergency Unit. Dr. Bioku Muftau emphasized that the Hospital's commitment to training and retraining is part of its core mandate to sustain patient satisfaction and improve healthcare outcomes.

The workshop was coordinated by Dr. Abiodun Olugbenga, Deputy Head of Clinical Services, Research and Training. The training was well-received by the participants, who appreciated the opportunity to enhance their skills and knowledge in emergency care.

The 2-day workshop on emergency services again shows FMC Abuja's commitment to providing quality healthcare services and improving patient outcomes. The Hospital's emphasis on training and retraining its staff is a step in the right direction, and it is expected that the skills and knowledge acquired during the workshop will translate into improved emergency care services at the facility.

UN SDSN Delegates Visit FMC Abuja for SDGs Changemaker Study Tour

Representatives of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN SDSN) visited the Federal Medical Centre Abuja today July 31, 2025. The delegates, who are advocates of Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3) - Good Health and Well-being, were received by the Head of Clinical Services, Dr. Bioku Muftau, on behalf of the Medical Director, Prof. Saad Ahmed.
Also in attendance included Deputy Head of Clinical Services Research and Training Dr Abiodun Olugbenga, Head of Account Mr Abimaje Isiaka, Head of Laboratory Services Mr Jude Odugu and Director of Administration Mrs Aisha Momoh.

Dr. Bioku Muftau welcomed the delegates and highlighted FMC Abuja's remarkable achievements under Prof. Saad Ahmed's leadership, including high-end surgeries and collaborations.

The team lead, Emmanuel Ola-Olowoyo, in his response to the welcome address disclosed that FMC Abuja was selected for the study tour due to its crucial role in promoting good health and well-being in Nigeria.

The visit according to the team is aimed at exploring learning experiences and real-life activities that impact the well-being of society, which further solidifying FMC Abuja's commitment to quality healthcare.

Briefly after the round table discussion, the delegates toured the Hospital's facilities after a group photograph.
