FMC Abuja and NICRAT Host Capacity Building Workshop on Skin Cancer Detection
As cancer continues to ravage the society, particularly affecting vulnerable populations, stakeholders have intensified efforts to combat the scourge. In line with this, the Federal Medical Centre Abuja and the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) have collaborated to organize a capacity-building workshop for healthcare workers on early detection of skin cancer.
The workshop, themed "Shade the Sun (Awareness Campaign for Persons with Albinism)", was held at FMC Abuja and brought together healthcare professionals to discuss ways of addressing the menace of skin cancer. The event was a significant platform for stakeholders to share knowledge and best practices on tackling this disease.
In a welcome address, Prof. Saad Ahmed, Medical Director of FMC Abuja, represented by Dr. Bioku Muftau, Head of Clinical Services, expressed appreciation for the efforts of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, NICRAT, Nigeria Association of Dermatologists (NAD), and other partners in the fight against cancer in Nigeria. He emphasized that skin cancer is a common disease, and early detection is crucial for effective management.
Prof. Saad Ahmed urged stakeholders to intensify awareness campaigns on skin cancer, particularly in relation to albinism, stressing the need for collective action to combat this disease. Similarly, Prof. Usman Malami Aliyu, Director General of NICRAT, called for increased efforts in fighting skin cancer, emphasizing the importance of a strengthened network of healthcare professionals dedicated to eradicating preventable skin cancer.
"Let this mark the beginning of a strengthened, more resilient network of healthcare professionals dedicated to eradicating preventable skin cancer and championing the health and dignity of every Nigerian, including those with Albinism," Prof. Usman Malami Aliyu said.
The workshop provided participants with valuable knowledge on skin cancer, including its causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options. The event was a significant step in the fight against skin cancer, and stakeholders hope that it will lead to increased awareness and improved healthcare outcomes for Nigerians affected by this disease.
