Today, we celebrate WORLD KIDNEY DAY. Permit to ask you according to this year's theme ARE YOUR KIDNEYS OK?.
What a question right? I am obviously fine as you can see, definitely my kidneys are ok.
My dear, you never can tell as you can't judge the kidneys on face value. It's a known fact that the kidneys of all the body organs are the most silent (non outspoken). That means, it can bear insult and assault for long before it voices out. you say 🤣. Most times, they often receive attention when other parts of the body calls out for help in sympathy. At this point, the situation is overwhelming for the kidneys, the entire body is in disarray because the master organ is in distress
Before, it gets to this point of slim chance of health recovery to the kidneys, you need to do something.
Dialysis and kidney transplant are the options for management when the kidneys health has been damaged to the point of no return (to normal). Not to scare you, either of these treatment options is expensive.
So, why wait for the expensive option when you can follow the cheap way.
You said? Yes I said the cheap way.
How cheap? As cheap as ;
1. Detecting early
2. Protecting your kidneys
DECTECT EARLY by going for regular check ups. Meet with your healthcare professional (nurse, doctor, lab scientist), request for Kidney Function Tests. It is as basic as urine and blood test (Urinalysis, E,U&Cr). Your urine and blood will be tested for the presence of certain substances that the Kidneys help to balance up or clear from the body. With this, you are saying "HELLO KIDNEYS, ARE YOU OK" then your kidneys can confide in you. If any concern, it can be attended promptly and your kidneys health can be salvaged.
PROTECT YOUR KIDNEYS
-Regular BP check (if you are hypertensive already, don't joke with this)
-Blood glucose monitoring and control (especially people with diabetes)
-Don't joke with your antihypertensive and antidiabetic medications
-Liberal fluid intake, 5L per day (unless, otherwise advised by your clinician )
-Limit salt intake (avoid extra or more salt on the table or in the kitchen)
-No no to herbal concoction
-Avoid over the counter, (non prescribed) medication. Avoid family, friends and neighbours' prescription🥹
-Say bye bye to alcohol intake
You are beautiful without skin bleaching agents, avoid bleachers totally.
-Adequate and balanced nutrition
Regular exercise
I wish you all KIDNEY HEALTH.
