*Fibromyalgia Syndrome*
Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) is a disease characterized by chronic pain, stiffness, and tenderness of muscles, tendons, and joints, without detectable inflammation. Fibromyalgia does not cause body damage or deformity. Fatigue affects 90 percent of patients, and sleep disorders are common. Fibromyalgia can be associated with other rheumatic conditions, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). There is no definitive medical test for the diagnosis of fibromyalgia.
Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep disturbances, and cognitive difficulties (often referred to as "fibro fog"). It's a complex condition, and its exact cause is unknown, but it's thought to involve abnormalities in how the central nervous system processes pain signals.
People may experience:
Pain areas: in the muscles, abdomen, back, or neck
Pain types: can be chronic, diffuse, sharp, or severe
Pain circumstances: can occur at night
Gastrointestinal: constipation, nausea, or passing excessive amounts of gas
Whole body: fatigue, feeling tired, or malaise
Muscular: muscle tenderness, delayed onset muscle soreness, or muscle spasms
Mood: anxiety, mood swings, or nervousness
Sleep: difficulty falling asleep or sleep disturbances
Sensory: pins and needles or sensitivity to pain
Cognitive: forgetfulness or lack of concentration
Hand: sensation of coldness or tingling
Also common: cold sensitivity, depression, flare, headache, irritability, joint stiffness, menstrual cramps, or tingling feet.
As well as widespread pain, people with fibromyalgia might also have:
increased sensitivity to sensations like touch, light, temperature, noise.
fatigue (extreme tiredness)
muscle stiffness.
difficulty sleeping.
problems with mental processes (known as “fibro-fog”) – like problems with memory and concentration.
