Breaking News: Michael Odenigbo to Plant 27,000 Moringa Trees in Enugu in Guinness World Record Attempt
Enugu, Nigeria – April 24, 2025
A Nigerian environmental enthusiast, Michael Odenigbo, is set to make history by planting 27,000 Moringa trees within 24 hours in Enugu State. The initiative, which is scheduled to take place from June 5th to 6th, 2025, is aimed at breaking the Guinness World Record for the most trees planted by an individual in a single day.
The project will be carried out on 4 hectares of land generously provided by the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT).
Why Moringa?
Odenigbo revealed that after thorough research, he chose the Moringa Oleifera tree for its many environmental and economic benefits. The Moringa tree is known for its high capacity to absorb carbon—a mature tree can absorb up to 80kg of carbon annually, making it one of the most climate-friendly trees in the world.
In addition to its environmental value, Moringa has strong economic potential. With a global market estimated at $16.37 billion, its leaves and seeds are widely used in the production of food, herbal and modern medicine, cosmetic products, animal feed, and even water purification materials.
Key Goals of the Project
Tackling Climate Change: The large-scale planting will contribute to reducing carbon emissions and support Nigeria’s environmental sustainability goals.
Economic Empowerment: The project is expected to create job opportunities and open up avenues for local income generation through the sale and processing of Moringa products.
Promoting Research: It will also encourage further scientific study in the fields of medicine, agriculture, and industry, especially in the South-East region.
Speaking on the project, Odenigbo said, “This effort is not just about setting a record. It’s about taking practical steps towards environmental protection and community development.”
Call for Support
The initiative has attracted interest from both local and international organizations, including UNICEF Nigeria, Greenpeace Africa, and DW Africa, and is open to volunteers, researchers, and sponsors who wish to be part of this impactful event.
As June approaches, all eyes will be on Enugu to witness what could become a landmark moment in Nigeria’s environmental journey.
