Did you know that most causes of maternal deaths are preventable?

Everyday, many women die from preventable pregnancy and childbirth complications. 💔💔
In an ideal world, childbirth should be a moment of joy. But in many parts of the world, especially in low-resource settings, women face life-threatening risks due to inadequate healthcare.

Major causes of maternal deaths include; ( Direct Causes)

💉Haemorrhage (severe bleeding)
💉Hypertension in pregnancy (pre-eclampsia and eclampsia)
💉Sepsis (infections)
💉Complications of labour and delivery (prolonged and obstructed labour)
💉Complications of unsafe abortions.

Other Contributing factors include: ( Indirect causes)
🩸Anaemia
🩸HIV/AIDS
🩸Sickle cell disease
🩸 Delay ; in seeking care, identifying and reaching a health facility or receiving appropriate treatment.
🩸Cultural beliefs, lack of education, poverty, lack of access to delivery tools or resources.

As a Midwife Practitioner, I have witnessed both heartbreaking losses and incredible success stories.
The solution to reducing maternal and newborn mobidity and mortality is clear:
👩🏽‍⚕More midwives & skilled birth attendants in rural areas.
👩🏽‍⚕Affordable & accessible maternal healthcare for all women.
👩🏽‍⚕ Education & empowerment for expectant mothers.

🤰🏾No woman should die while giving life.Every mother deserves safe, respectful, and high-quality healthcare.
🤰🏾It is important that all births are attended by skilled health professionals, as timely management and treatment can make the difference between life and death for the mother as well as for the baby.

🤰🏾

*DID YOU KNOW THAT AS A WOMAN YOU SHOULD EXAMINE YOUR BREASTS AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH ?*

Yes! As a woman perform a breast self-exam (BSE) at least once a month, ideally a few days after your period ends when your breasts are less tender and swollen.

For women who are postmenopausal, picking a consistent day each month is recommended.

*WHY SHOULD WOMEN SELF - EXAMINE THEIR BREASTS.
*
Regular self-exams helps you to become familiar with your normal breast tissue, making it easier for you to notice anything unusual or abnormal, like lumps changes in size, shape, or texture, dimpling, or ni**le discharge.

Studies have also shown that women who were diagnosed earlier on with breast cancer were the first to notice unusual changes in their breast. Remember,

*SIMPLE STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE ON HOW TO PERFORM BREAST SELF-EXAMINATION (BSE)*

🎀 👒 🎗 💝 🎀 👒 🎗 💝

You can examine your breasts while sitting or standing with your back straight in front of the mirror and in the shower, and also while lying down.

1. *IN FRONT OF A MIRROR*

In Front of a Mirror

💜 Stand with arms at your sides and observe your breasts.

💜 Look for changes in shape, swelling, dimpling, or ni**le discharge.

💜 Raise your arms and check again.

💜 Lastly, place your hands on your hips and flex your chest muscles to observe any changes.

2. *IN THE SHOWER

💗 Raise one arm and use the opposite hand to feel your breast.

💗 Use three middle fingers to apply gentle, medium, and firm pressure in circular motions.

💗 Cover the entire breast and armpit area for any lumps or thickening.

3. *LYING DOWN
*
❤️ Lie down with a pillow under your right shoulder and place your right arm behind your head.

❤️ Use your left hand to check the right breast using circular motions.

❤️ Repeat on the left breast using your right hand.

❤️ Squeeze each ni**le gently to check for discharge.

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR.

Lumps or thickening that feels different from the rest of your breast tissue.

Changes in breast size, shape, or texture.

Dimpling, puckering, or redness.

Unusual ni**le discharge (especially bloody or clear).

IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE .

Most lumps are not cancerous, but any unusual findings should be checked by a healthcare provider.

Women over 40 should combine self-exams with regular mammograms and clinical breast exams.

I hope this adds value to you.....this is one health check up you have to do consistently every month. Thank you for reading till this point, please like, share and follow.
