PRESS STATEMENT BY THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SEADOGS ON THE 5TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE PROTESTS

Five years on, the lessons of appear unlearned. The continuing heavy-handed police response to peaceful civic demonstrations, including the ongoing protests in Abuja and other parts of the country demanding the release of the leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, suggests that Nigeria is yet to internalize the fundamental principles of democracy.

The National Association of Seadogs reiterates that the right to peaceful protest and free expression is constitutionally guaranteed and must be respected at all times. While law enforcement agencies have a duty to maintain public order, this responsibility must be exercised with professionalism, restraint, and respect for human rights.

BLOOD ON THE FLAG 🇳🇬

Today, we solemnly remember the tragic events of October 20, 2020 - a dark night at the Lekki Toll Gate when innocent and unarmed citizens, united in a call for justice and good governance, were met with brutal force.

We honour the courage of those who stood for a better Nigeria and pay tribute to the lives lost and the voices silenced.

May their sacrifice never be forgotten.

The NAS Street Child Project (NSCP) NAS Street Child Project is an initiative of the National Association of Seadogs (NAS) instituted in 2013 to address the significantly high rate of out-of-school children in Nigeria with UNESCO and UNICEF statistics indicating that Nigeria accounts for 10.5 million of the 61 million “out of school children” worldwide as at 2013. The statistics are not better today.

Today, the data is a lot more scary and worse than 12 years ago. According to UNESCO Institute of Statistics (2025), of the primary school-age population in Nigeria -
Girls: 13,684,000 with 32% of girls are out of school; and
Boys: 14,242,000 with 27% of boys are out of school.

Among the poorest families, more than two-thirds of children are out of school, with 64% of poorest children out of school and 5% of richest children out of school.

Act ova Yap: “Wherever the community in which we exist needs a hand, in whatever cause…, the PYRATE must be FIRST”.

In times of violent conflict and massive flooding—realities faced by many in Nigeria—mental health support is not a luxury; it’s a lifeline. Displacement, loss, and uncertainty can leave deep psychological wounds that require care and attention.

NAS Medical Mission stands with affected communities, advocating for accessible, timely, and compassionate mental health services during emergencies. Because healing the mind is as vital as rebuilding homes.

Globally, mental health and psychosocial support are recognized as essential, especially during humanitarian emergencies and catastrophes like conflict, displacement, epidemics and natural disasters. These crises often cause psychological distress and contribute to long-term mental health issues. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that one in five people in conflict-affected areas will face a mental health condition. However, access to mental health services remains limited in many low- and middle-income countries like Nigeria.

In Nigeria, the scale of the challenge is stark. An estimated 20 million Nigerians live with mental health conditions, yet fewer than 10 percent of those who need care can access support. The number of psychiatrists and mental health practitioners is very low for a population of more than 200 million. Services are especially scarce in emergency and catastrophe circumstances, whether in conflict-affected communities, internally displaced person camps or natural disasters. Access to mental health services remains limited in many areas, and compounded by stigma and traditional beliefs which impedes on seeking help in times of crisis.

The National Association of Seadogs (NAS) joins the comity of nations and organisation on the occasion of 2025 World Mental Health Day to respond directly to these gaps, and advocate for access to mental health services in Nigeria. NAS-PC aligns with WHO goals and national mental health policy in pushing for accessible, affordable, and equitable mental health care and in supporting the protection and well-being of citizens.

The overall objective is to use today’s World Mental Health Day as a platform to raise awareness, engage communities and policymakers, and advance access to mental health services in Nigeria, especially in catastrophe and emergency contexts.
