Before my cancer diagnosis, I had my last cervical screening test in 2018. I was asked to come back after a year but never made it back. I was too busy working trying to get a promotion here or bonus there at work, coupled with being a single mum of two boys. To be fair to the clinic, I got a reminder from them twice but just ignored it.

In 2020, I met this wonderful guy with whom I always felt like our relationship was too good to be true. After a few weeks of dating, he was very sure he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. This should have made the happiest woman but you know how it is with our culture; after two kids I thought the best I could do was find a divorcee.

Not long after I started to get va**na infections back to back. This month it's yeast, next month it's something else. I just kept treating and treating and it was quite frustrating. Not until I got intimate with my partner, I noticed he wanted to say something but didn’t know how. In my head, I was thinking maybe another infection was starting out or I had a funny smell down there.

About a week after, we got intimate again and this time he brought it to my notice that I was bleeding after s*x and asked if I hadn’t noticed it before. Of course not, I hadn’t been in a relationship for the longest time.

We visited the clinic the next day. It was when I got to the clinic and was asked when I last had a cervical screening, I remembered I never went back for my appointment. While I was still at the clinic, I started to read about signs of cervical cancer and after a while, I was convinced it was cervical cancer even when the doctor said she would need to run a few more tests to confirm.

It was a few weeks of waiting and while I waited, I tried my best to stay hopeful. My fiance tried his best to comfort and reassure me he was going to be with me all the way no matter what the results were. I really wanted to believe him but as a result of my previous experience with men before him, I didn’t totally believe him.
The results came back saying I had stage 1 cervical cancer. I was numb. I thought about my children and started crying. I told my parents and siblings and it was like someone died already. It was all tears.

My fiance still stayed and was insanely supportive. We visited other clinics for second, third, fourth opinions and it was still the same diagnosis. It was the toughest time of my life. I had to travel abroad for the surgery. I got a hysterectomy because according to the doctors, there was a high chance the cancer could come back. My ovaries, fallopian tubes and the top part of my va**na were taken out and just like that I lost my fertility at 33.

I already had two children but what about my fiance who had none. I still wanted a girl though and hoped I'll achieve that with him. What will be our future? He had always said he wanted children. I felt like a failure and even had to give him the option of breaking up with me but he still stayed through my recovery and proposed after.

We are married now and everytime someone asks when will you have children for your husband, it's like I’m reliving the experience all over. I cope by speaking positively to myself every time; I survived cancer and in our time we will welcome our children through the several assisted reproduction options available.
I’ll say to every woman-get your regular screenings, never be too busy to make time for your appointments. Most importantly, understand your body and know when to visit the clinic. All the while I was treating infections back to back, I knew it had to be something else but I never followed through by visiting the clinic for a proper check up.

If I also had gone back for a repeat screening in a year, I would have detected it earlier and had a much more simpler treatment that wouldn't require losing my fertility.

Cervical Cancer is caused by a HPV (Human Papillomavirus) infection left untreated for many years. It is s*xually transmitted and does not show signs early. However, some women have complained of pain during s*x, bleeding during/after s*x, bleeding in between periods, abdominal pain, low back pain, and excessive va**nal discharge.

This infection can only be detected early through regular screening and treated to prevent its progression to cervical cancer in the future.

Screening is Free. Click this link to book yours if you are in Abuja https://HPI.selar.com/page/screening Don't forget to share with friends
