After an IUI procedure, here’s what typically happens:
🔹 Immediately after the insemination
You may be asked to lie down for 10–30 minutes so the s***m can remain inside the uterus.
Some women feel mild cramping (similar to period cramps) or notice light spotting, which is normal.
🔹 The “two-week wait”
This is the period between the IUI and the pregnancy test.
Normal activities: You can usually return to your daily routine right away; strenuous exercise is sometimes discouraged if you took fertility meds and have enlarged ovaries.
Medications: Some clinics prescribe progesterone supplements (pills, vaginal capsules, or injections) to support the uterine lining.
Symptoms: Breast tenderness, bloating, mood swings, or mild cramping can happen, but these can also be from the medications or early pregnancy—so they’re not reliable signs.
🔹 Pregnancy testing
Around 14 days after IUI, you’ll take a blood test (β-hCG) or home urine pregnancy test.
Testing too early can give a false positive (if you had an hCG trigger shot) or false negative (if levels aren’t high enough yet).
🔹 If the cycle is successful
The clinic confirms pregnancy with blood tests and later an early ultrasound (around 6–7 weeks) to check for heartbeat and implantation site.
Progesterone support may continue for several weeks.
🔹 If the cycle is not successful
Your period will usually come about 2 weeks after IUI.
The fertility specialist may review the cycle, adjust medications, or suggest another IUI attempt (often 3–6 cycles are tried before moving to IVF, depending on your age and situation).
⚠️ Possible side effects after IUI:
Mild cramping, bloating, spotting (normal).
Rarely: infection, or ovarian hyperstimulation (if strong medications were used).
