FEDERAL FIRE SERVICE COMMITS TO 2026 PERFORMANCE TARGETS AS MINISTRY OF INTERIOR CONCLUDES SECTORAL RETREAT

The Federal Fire Service has reaffirmed its commitment to improved emergency response, fire safety enforcement, and public protection as the 2026 Sectoral Retreat of the Ministry of Interior and its agencies concluded in Abuja.

The retreat, which brought together the leadership of agencies under the Ministry of Interior, provided a strategic platform for reviewing institutional performance, strengthening accountability frameworks, and aligning operational priorities with the Federal Government’s service delivery objectives.

A key highlight of the Day Three wrap-up and closing session was the signing of the 2026 Performance Contract Bonds by Heads of Agencies under the Ministry. The Controller General, Federal Fire Service, Olumode Samuel Adeyemi, MBA, MDRM. FCNA, ACTI, joined other agency heads in formally endorsing the contract bond, which outlines measurable Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and service delivery benchmarks for the year 2026.

For the Federal Fire Service, the performance contract represents a renewed institutional commitment to strengthening fire prevention systems, expanding emergency and rescue capabilities, improving response time, and deepening public safety awareness across the country. It also reinforces ongoing reforms aimed at modernizing firefighting operations, enhancing personnel capacity through specialized training, and strengthening collaboration with critical stakeholders in safety regulation and disaster management.

The Controller General emphasized that the contract bond will further drive reforms within the Service by promoting transparency, measurable results, and operational efficiency in the delivery of fire and rescue services nationwide.

With the implementation of these performance targets, Nigerians can expect a more responsive Federal Fire Service, strengthened safety enforcement, improved protection of lives and property, and a more visible presence of fire safety institutions across communities.

Speaking during the closing ceremony, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, charged the heads of agencies to remain fully committed to delivering the quality of service Nigerians deserve. He emphasized that leadership within the Ministry must remain focused on results and accountability.

According to the Minister, “Our eyes must not be taken off the ball. Nigerians deserve the country they desire, and delivering it is not a choice but an obligation.”

The Minister also specifically tasked the Federal Fire Service to bring emergency and rescue services to the forefront of national safety architecture, assuring citizens that help will always be available when emergencies occur.

He further urged the Service to strengthen its public presence and responsiveness, stressing that the Federal Fire Service must continue to stand as the helper of the helpless and the voice of the voiceless, ensuring that every Nigerian has confidence that assistance will arrive whenever distress calls are made.

NAF FC, FIRE FC CLASH IN FRIENDLY THRILLER TO PROMOTE FIRE SAFETY AWARENESS AND INTER-AGENCY COLLABORATION

It was football, fun, and purposeful collaboration as NAF FC and Fire FC faced off in an exciting friendly match aimed at promoting fire safety awareness while strengthening inter-agency cooperation through sport.

The lively encounter took place at the NAF Sports Complex, Air Force Base, Airport Road, Abuja, where both teams displayed energy, discipline, and attacking football, using the platform of sports to highlight the shared responsibility of national institutions in promoting safety and protecting lives.

Fire FC struck first when CFA Yakubu Uba calmly converted a penalty after a Fire attacker was brought down in the box. The early goal energized the Fire side, but NAF FC quickly responded with determination, leveling the score through a well-taken free kick that found the back of the net to make it 1–1 before halftime.

Despite several chances created by both sides, the game ended in an entertaining 1–1 draw.

Beyond the scoreline, the friendly served as a platform for collaboration between the Nigerian Air Force and the Federal Fire Service, demonstrating how sport can be used to promote fire safety awareness, teamwork, and stronger institutional partnerships in service to the nation.

FFS: MINISTER APPEALS TO NATIONAL ASSEMBLY FOR PASSAGE OF FIRE SERVICE ACT, CHARGES FFS TO STRENGTHEN FIRE PREVENTION STRATEGIES

The Honourable Minister of Interior has appealed to the National Assembly to expedite action on the passage of the Fire Service Act, noting that the Federal Fire Service (FFS) is still operating under the 1963 Fire Service Act, a legal framework he described as outdated and inadequate for addressing contemporary fire safety challenges.

The Minister made this appeal during his ministerial charge at the opening ceremony of the ongoing 2026 Ministerial Sectoral Retreat of the Ministry of Interior and its agencies in Abuja.

According to the Minister, failure to pass the new Fire Service Act is “like embarking on a journey without an end,” emphasizing that modern fire services across the world are empowered not only with operational authority but also with powers relating to enumeration, professional recommendations, and broader regulatory responsibilities. He noted that the current framework limits the Federal Fire Service largely to operational duties.

He therefore stressed the urgent need for a modern legal structure that will strengthen the capacity of the Service to meet current realities and improve Nigeria’s emergency management system.

Speaking further on the role of the Federal Fire Service, the Minister emphasized that emergency management should focus more on fire prevention rather than only rescue operations, encouraging wider stakeholder participation in fire safety awareness and prevention across the country.

The Minister also reviewed the achievements recorded by agencies under the Ministry of Interior in 2025, attributing the successes to the leadership and support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while commending agencies for meeting key performance indicators (KPIs) that directly impact the lives of millions of Nigerians.

He noted that the National Fire Academy remains one of the most significant projects executed under the current administration, adding that while considerable progress has been made in strengthening the Service, more work still lies ahead.

The Minister explained that the retreat provides a platform for agencies to identify operational gaps not for condemnation but for correction, stressing that honest institutional assessment is necessary for improving service delivery.

He further highlighted the improvements recorded in the welfare and career progression of personnel across the Ministry’s paramilitary services, revealing that over 70,000 promotions have been approved by President Tinubu within the last three years, addressing long-standing career stagnation.

According to him, “a happy workforce is an efficient workforce,” noting that personnel can now plan their career progression with greater certainty.

The Minister concluded by charging the leadership of agencies under the Ministry of Interior to continue giving their best and adopt innovative approaches that will strengthen service delivery and make the Ministry a pride of the public service.

The 2026 Ministerial Sectoral Retreat, themed “Accountable Leadership, Measurable Impacts, Reviewing Results, Renewing Commitments,” is currently bringing together the leadership of the Ministry and its agencies to review performance, assess challenges, and strengthen commitments toward improved service delivery for Nigerians.

CGF CALLS FOR STRATEGIC STAKEHOLDER PARTNERSHIP TO STRENGTHEN FIRE SAFETY NATIONWIDE

The Controller General, Federal Fire Service, Olumode Samuel Adeyemi, MBA, MDRM, FCNA, ACTI, has called on critical stakeholders across Nigeria to work in close partnership with the Federal Fire Service in order to reinforce fire prevention advocacy and reduce the growing incidence of fire outbreaks in the country.

The Controller General made this appeal during a meeting with representatives of Renaissance Africa Energy, who paid him a courtesy visit at the Service Headquarters on Wednesday, 25th February, 2026.

The delegation, led by the Emergency Response Manager of Renaissance Africa Energy, Prof. Abatam Nwosu, highlighted the company’s ongoing investments in safety systems, personnel training, and proactive fire prevention measures, particularly in protecting lives, infrastructure, and host communities. He noted that the purpose of the visit was to explore areas of collaboration with the Federal Fire Service in strengthening emergency preparedness and response capacity.

In his response, the Controller General emphasized that fire safety management requires a multi-sectoral approach and cannot be achieved by government alone. He stated that the Service welcomes Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives and technical partnerships that will improve operational efficiency, enhance community awareness, and build national resilience against fire disasters.

He explained that closer collaboration would improve early detection and reporting of fire incidents, strengthen emergency response coordination, and expand public fire safety education and awareness across communities. He added that such partnerships would also support specialised training and capacity development for firefighters, enhance the availability and maintenance of modern firefighting equipment, and ultimately reduce the loss of lives, property, and critical infrastructure.

The Controller General further noted that sustained synergy with responsible organisations will significantly shorten the nation’s journey toward achieving a safer environment, stressing that prevention remains the most cost-effective strategy in fire disaster management.
