SPOTLIGHT ON THE THEME OF THE 18TH ANNUAL PUBLIC HEALTH LECTURE: MITIGATING INTRACTABLE DISEASES OUTBREAK THROUGH STRENGTHENING MEDICAL LABORATORY SERVICES
The successful expansion of laboratory testing capacity was instrumental in the control and management of disease outbreaks and critical in the implementation of public response strategies. Significantly, laboratory diagnosis is an essential element of communicable disease surveillance, both for routine confirmation of infections and for the rapid identification of the cause of outbreaks and epidemics. Surveillance is the ongoing, systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of health data.
Intractable diseases refer to rare diseases that have resulted mostly from unidentified causes and/or lack of clearly established curable treatments. In the modern era, many would assume that the etiology and management of most human diseases have been established owing to current advances in knowledge and sophisticated technology. In reality, however, there are still a substantial number of diseases for which we have little or no information concerning cause and treatment. These diseases include many congenital or inherited conditions such as congenital biliary atresia, Marfan syndrome, and CINCA syndrome
The theme of the PHL will delve into the critical role of robust medical laboratory services in the prevention and control of intractable diseases. It'll explore how advancements in laboratory techniques and infrastructure can significantly enhance the ability of medical laboratories to detect, respond to, and ultimately mitigate the spread of infectious diseases. From innovative diagnostic technologies to capacity-building initiatives, the presentation will uncover the pivotal role of medical laboratories in safeguarding public health.
The presentation will expectedly cover the following aspects:

1. Understanding the Impact of Intractable Diseases: Explore the challenges posed by intractable diseases and their potential consequences on public health and society.
2. Strengthening Laboratory Capacities: Highlight on the essential components of a resilient medical laboratory system and how investments in infrastructure, human resources, and quality assurance are fundamental to its success.
3. Leveraging Technological Innovations: Discover how cutting-edge diagnostic technologies and digital solutions are revolutionizing disease detection and surveillance, enabling rapid response and containment efforts.
4. Building Collaborative Partnerships: Explore the importance of collaboration between medical laboratories, public health agencies, academia, and other stakeholders in strengthening disease prevention and control measures.
5. Case Studies and Success Stories: Hear real-life examples of how strengthened medical laboratory services have made a tangible impact in mitigating disease outbreaks and saving lives in Nigeria and across the globe.

*AMLSN COMMEMORATES WORLD TUBERCULOSIS DAY, 2024*

*Motto of the day - WE CAN END TB*

Despair may be an understandable impression as Tuberculosis(TB), one of the world’s deadliest infectious diseases is responsible for the death of about 3,560 people and made close to 30,000 people fall ill daily. What is most worrying is the increase in drug resistant TB. The battle however, is far from being lost.

Commemoration of the 2024 world TB day focuses on renewing commitments, adoption of innovations and turning the earlier undertakings of civil society organizations ,agencies of government and global response initiatives to substantial actions.

The last year’s theme *“Yes! We can end TB”*, is kept to keep the focus on the amazing work done in 2022 when an unprecedented headway was accomplished with a record *7.5 million diagnoses made out of an estimated 10.3 million cases* - the highest number of people with TB ever diagnosed and treated in a year.

We must continue to emphasize the power of collaboration among those affected by TB, communities, civil society organizations, and innovators in our shared journey towards ending TB by 2030.

Medical Laboratory Scientists have continued to deploy innovations, digital tools and best technologies available in diagnosing TB accurately and timely. This has led to better health outcomes and saved millions of lives.

The collaborative efforts of the Nigerian government, civil society organizations including *AMLSN*
and donors in funding researches aimed at TB prevention(Vaccines production), better diagnosis (using quality-assured rapid molecular diagnosis and test) and highly effective and efficient treatment (safe and shorter TB treatment regimens) cannot be overemphasized.

Nigeria as a country must continue to implement its national responses to the TB epidemic and provide strategies to enable the country reach the global End TB strategy targets.

Also, eradicating TB entails more than medical interventions alone. It requires a coordinated approach that addresses the underlying factors of tuberculosis transmission, such as economic inequality, stigma and lack of access to healthcare.

*TB is preventable and curable.*

As we observe the 2024 world TB day, let us convey the message of hope, with the determination that we can end TB through our resolve of turning the tide against the TB epidermic. This is achievable through high level leadership, increased commitments and investments and quick uptake of the new WHO recommendations.

AMLSN COMMEMORATES INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSAL HEALTH COVERAGE (UHC) DAY 2023

Universal Health Coverage (UHC) is an issue of global importance that requires the deployment of renewed and specific political policies and strategies that are targeted at making good health/well-being a right for all and not privilege for a few.

The theme for this year is HEALTH FOR ALL: TIME FOR ACTION

The policies to be enacted must guarantee even-handed access to essential services without financial distress. Often, awful health expenditures have continued to impoverish many households in the quest for health.

AMLSN in collaboration with government, private sector, civil society, NGOs, etc shall consider the evaluation of challenges and opportunities in advancing UHC and push to hold our leaders accountable.
We will engage policy makers to deliver on their UHC commitments.

Also, intentional actions and oriented commitments must be activated at the primary health care level, being the foundation. This will reasonably engender
