Plan International Nigeria’s priorities include increasing the enrolment of school children - especially girls - in basic education, improving the healt

h of women and children, and strengthening child participation in the Nigerian children’s parliament.

Plan International Nigeria and the University of Abuja formalized a strategic collaboration through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding at the Vice Chancellor’s office reinforcing a shared vision to connect academic excellence with real-world impact.

Rooted in a commitment to advancing gender equality and youth empowerment, this partnership creates meaningful pathways for students to move beyond the classroom and engage directly with development practice. From collaborative research on gender and social development to hands-on learning in communities, the focus is clear: knowledge that drives change.

The MoU also sets the stage for integrating gender-transformative approaches within academic programming, while establishing safe and inclusive spaces that support student wellbeing, leadership, and open dialogue on critical issues.

As highlighted during the engagement, partnerships like this are essential in shaping a generation of young people equipped not only with knowledge, but with the skills, experience, and agency to lead sustainable development efforts in Nigeria and beyond.

Together, we are investing in a future where young people especially girls and young women can learn, lead, make decisions, and thrive.

Yesterday’s International Women’s Day Policy Dialogue, convened by Plan International Nigeria in collaboration with the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), landed one message with clarity: gender equality in Nigeria must move beyond commitments, it is now a question of budgets, priorities, and power.

Our panel moved the conversation from theory to practical pathways for change. Ene Obi grounded the discussion in what works, emphasising people-centred and participatory budgeting models that reflect the voices and realities of those most affected, especially women and girls, rather than treating budgets as technical documents detached from lived experience.

Building on this, the dialogue unpacked how Gender-Responsive Budgeting must be intentionally integrated across the full budget cycle, from planning and allocation to implementation and tracking, and why closing the gap requires more than policy language. It requires organised public demand, stronger accountability, and deliberate investment in the areas that shape girls’ lives: education, protection, health, and economic empowerment.

A key highlight was the presentation of the Position Paper, Investing in Equality: Tracking Nigeria’s Gender-Responsive Budgeting and Development (2016–2026), delivered by Jonathan Abakpa of Plan International Nigeria. The paper clearly outlined the gap between Nigeria’s gender commitments and actual allocations, and presented actionable recommendations to move from commitment to investment, and ultimately to measurable impact.

In closing, Charles Emmamuzou Usie reinforced the core reality: Nigeria does not lack policies; what is needed now is deliberate prioritisation, financing, and accountability. Hon. Blessing Amadi’s closing remarks further underscored the role of leadership and legislative action in ensuring that women and girls are not only included in policy conversations, but reflected in national budgets.

Plan International Nigeria will continue to push for gender equality where it matters most in policies, budgets, and everyday decisions that shape women’s and girls’ lives. We will keep engaging government and legislators, working with partners, and amplifying the voices and realities of women and girls to drive action that is properly funded, tracked, and delivered.

And we will not stop .

Join Plan International Nigeria for a hybrid dialogue themed: Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls. We’ll unpack what it takes to move women’s rights from policy pages to funded action, examining women’s leadership and decision-making, and how gender is prioritised (or overlooked) in the National Gender Policy and the 2026 Federal Government budget.
