Plan International Nigeria

Plan International Nigeria Plan International Nigeria is a girl and child rights organisation, implementing programs designed to strengthen and promote the rights of children and women.

Plan International started programmes in Nigeria in 2014, following the acquisition of the Centre for Development and Population Activities (CEDPA), a USA-based international non-governmental organisation that began working in the country in 1985. Plan International Nigeria’s priorities include increasing the enrolment of school children - especially girls - in basic education, improving the health of women and children, and strengthening child participation in the Nigerian children’s parliament.

Investing in girls is not just the right thing to do, it is the smart thing to do for sustainable development.

We recently had the honour of welcoming the Canadian High Commissioner to Bauchi State, where Canada-supported programmes are driving measurable progress for adolescent girls and young women across health, education, protection, economic empowerment, and disability inclusion.

Through the Aspire project, supported by Global Affairs Canada, Plan International Nigeria is advancing girl-centered, community-driven interventions that tackle harmful gender norms and expand opportunities for girls to thrive.

Engagements with Plan-supported groups highlighted tangible shifts:
• School Health Clubs at the Special Education Centre, Bauchi, strengthening inclusive health education and leadership opportunities for girls, including girls with disabilities
• Champion of Change (Boys and Girls) promoting positive social norms, youth leadership, and gender equality
• Interpersonal Therapy for Groups (IPTG) supporting adolescent mental health and resilience
• Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA) advancing financial inclusion and economic empowerment for young women and mothers

The visit reinforced the value of direct community engagement, evidence-based programming, and local ownership in achieving sustainable outcomes for girls.

In collaboration with Global Affairs Canada, Plan International Nigeria continues to champion adolescent girls’ rights to health, protection, education, and economic empowerment across Nigeria.

This engagement reaffirmed a shared commitment to ensuring that girls are not only included in development conversations, but are leading them.

We remain committed to ensuring that every girl in Nigeria has the opportunity, support, and enabling environment to reach her full potential.

Behind every number is a girl with a dream.
Behind every statistic is her future.

In FY25, we reached 36,917,265 people across 21 states advancing education, protection, leadership, and opportunities so girls can learn, lead, thrive, and decide.
Because when girls rise, communities move forward.

“All stakeholders must demonstrate a genuine commitment to achieving lasting change, and that starts by creating spaces where young women and girls can define their own challenges and propose their own solutions.” — Dr Charles Usie.

Dr Usie made this point at the African Social Impact Summit because too often, policies about women and girls are designed without their direct input. When girls are excluded from the conversation, solutions risk missing the realities they face every day.

Three weeks ago, leaders from government, civil society, and the private sector convened at the Summit for a high-level policy dialogue focused on Nigeria’s development priorities. A central theme was the need for stronger government ownership to ensure that commitments move beyond statements and translate into measurable, accountable outcomes.

Plan International Nigeria participated actively, presenting practical, evidence-based recommendations to strengthen policies that advance the rights, protection, education, and leadership of young women and girls. Drawing from our programme experience across communities, we emphasised that inclusive systems, particularly in education, protection, and civic participation, are critical to unlocking long-term national development.

The conversation was clear: sustainable impact requires more than intention. It requires action that is shaped by the voices of those most affected.

Plan International Nigeria remains committed to ensuring that girls are not only beneficiaries of development, but active contributors to the decisions that shape their futures.

Speak up!

Silence allows harmful practices like Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM) to continue.

Every girl deserves safety, dignity, and the right to grow up free from harm.

When we speak up, we protect girls.
When we speak up, we save lives.

Today, on the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM), Plan International Nigeria stands in solidarity with girls, survivors, advocates, and communities working to end this harmful practice.

Globally, over 200 million girls and women alive today have undergone FGM, according to UN estimates. Without urgent action, millions more remain at risk. In Nigeria, an estimated 20 million women and girls are affected, making it one of the countries with the highest number of FGM survivors worldwide. While prevalence is declining, the practice persists across communities, generations, and social groups.

FGM is a violation of girls’ and women’s rights. It has no health benefits, no justification, and no place in any society. At Plan International Nigeria, we unequivocally condemn FGM in all its forms and continue to support community-led action, survivor-centred responses, and policies that protect girls from harm.

Ending FGM requires more than condemnation, it requires investment in girls. When girls are educated, protected, and empowered, harmful practices lose their grip. Informed girls are better able to claim their rights, stay in school, and shape their own futures.

Zero tolerance means choosing protection over tradition, dignity over pain, and courage over silence. It means listening to girls, supporting families and community leaders to abandon harmful practices, and strengthening systems that ensure every girl can grow up safe, healthy, and in control of her own body.

Through sustained advocacy, education, and partnership, we remain committed to ending FGM, once and for all. Together, by investing in girls today, we can build a future where every girl in Nigeria is respected, protected, and free to thrive.

According to UNESCO, 129 million girls globally are still out of school. In Nigeria, an estimated 18.5 million children are not in school, with girls making up nearly 60 per cent of this number. These figures reflect not just gaps in access to education, but deeper structural inequalities that continue to limit opportunities for millions of girls.

At Plan International Nigeria, we recognise girls’ education as a critical driver of equality, economic growth, and social resilience. Educating girls helps break cycles of poverty, reduce inequality, and build more secure and inclusive societies. Prioritising girls’ education is therefore essential, not only for girls themselves, but for accelerating progress across all the Sustainable Development Goals.

Education is not just a right; it is a powerful catalyst for equality, resilience, and sustainable development.

On this International Day of Education, as the global community reflects on the need to accelerate learning for a rapidly changing world, Plan International Nigeria reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that every child, especially every girl, can access safe, inclusive, and quality education.

Yet, for millions of children, education remains out of reach. Conflict, poverty, displacement, early marriage, and harmful gender norms continue to deny girls the opportunity to learn, lead, and decide their futures. These barriers do more than interrupt schooling; they limit potential and deepen inequality across generations.

That is why Plan International Nigeria works alongside communities, governments, partners, and young people to dismantle these barriers. From strengthening education systems and supporting learning in crisis contexts, to promoting girls’ leadership, digital skills, and safe learning spaces, our programmes are designed to ensure that education is not only accessible, but transformative.

This year’s International Day of Education is a call to action, to invest boldly in learning, to protect education in emergencies, and to place girls at the centre of solutions. Because when girls are educated, communities thrive, economies grow, and the future is rewritten. Together, let us ensure that no child is left behind.
