Plan International started programmes in Nigeria in 2014, following the acquisition of the Centre for Development and Population Activities (CEDPA), a USA-based international non-governmental organisation that began working in the country in 1985. Plan International Nigeria’s priorities include increasing the enrolment of school children - especially girls - in basic education, improving the health of women and children, and strengthening child participation in the Nigerian children’s parliament.

🔥  | Year 4

At Plan International Nigeria, we are intentional about empowering girls, strengthening their agency, and creating leadership opportunities where they can make decisions on issues that affect them, shape solutions, and be heard. With this in mind, and as part of our 2025 International Day of the Girl activities, we spotlighted girl-led leadership in action. 💙✨

On the 18 Oct 2025, we inaugurated our 2025 Shadow Country Director - Ufedojo Victory Okoliko, a bold, brilliant changemaker. Ufedojo steps into this spotlight to champion girls’ voices, leadership, and decision-making power, showing what is possible when girls lead. 💙✨

Now in its fourth edition, the Shadow Country Director initiative showcases our commitment to nurturing real pathways for girls to learn, lead, decide, and thrive, accelerating our ambition to empower 20 million girls by 2028. Join us in celebrating Ufedojo and every girl taking her seat at the table. Stay tuned for more updates on her journey! Congratulations, Ufedojo! 🙌🏾

This year’s put girls at the centre of power. 🌍✨ Yesterday, as Joy Ogar stepped into the Office of the Vice President of Nigeria for a day, it was not just symbolic; it showed what happens when girls are trusted to lead: confidence, clarity, and purpose in action.

His Excellency, Vice President Kashim Shettima said, “Education is the foundation for every nation’s progress; we must invest in girls’ education and protect their safety, dignity, and aspirations.”

That commitment echoes across our ambition and belief as an organisation that girls are not the leaders of tomorrow; they are leaders today.

The representative, Joy, carried the message home: “I may have been Vice President for one day, but I stand for millions of girls whose voices deserve to be heard every day… Investing in girls is not charity; it’s investing in our nation’s future.”

This is not a moment; this is a movement for equality, leadership, and transformation. Because girls are the now and the future of any nation. 💙 Tag a girl who inspires you, share this, and keep girls’ voices at the table, every day, everywhere.

Recent floods have damaged homes and livelihoods and tragically taken lives, affecting thousands across . Though water levels are receding, people are preparing, learning, and standing together to reduce further risks. 🤝

Meet 32-year-old Usman Hassan Kaku ♿, a person with a disability who attended our flood-resilience and activities in Parkumo Community, Ribadu, Fufore LGA, Adamawa State. He arrived in his hand tricycle, determined not to miss the training. Despite mobility challenges and living in a flood-prone area, his passion to learn and support others stood out. 💪

“I came here to learn the signs of heavy rain, flooding, and the actions to take before and during flooding for people like me. I wanted to understand the evacuation plans and find out what support is available for us,” Usman explained. He found the training helpful and got the information he was looking for. 📚🧭

Now, Usman feels more confident and ready to support people like him and others in his neighbourhood, so no one is left behind when early warnings come or relief aid is delivered. 🚨📢

His participation reminds us that inclusion strengthens resilience and that everyone has a role to play in preparing the community before hazards happen. 🌱

This is part of Plan Nigeria’s Anticipatory Action initiative: taking early action and strengthening flood-resilient communities across seven LGAs in Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe, targeting 21,000 vulnerable people, half of them girls and women. 👧🏾👩🏾‍🦱

Together, we can build flood-resilient communities that anticipate disasters. Are you with us? 💙

Last week, came alive in Ribadu, Fufore LGA (Adamawa State). Community members, including youth, women, and persons with disabilities, gathered to learn, plan, and prepare before floods could threaten their homes and livelihoods. 🏠

Officials from the Ministry of Environment and SEMA shared key safety tips and evacuation plans to help communities act early once flood warnings are issued. 🧭📢

We are working with local stakeholders and vulnerable community members to build capacity for early response, including pre-positioning dignity kits and NFIs (pads, combs, towels, soap; blankets, mosquito nets, solar lights, mattresses, jerry cans), conducting community sensitisation, setting up early-warning committees, running drills, clearing drainage, issuing timely alerts and evacuation plans, and training volunteers, community leaders, and first responders. 🧰🧼🛏️📢🧭

Early action saves lives and livelihoods. Join us: partner, share alerts, and support preparedness. 💙

🎉 Meet Rt. Hon. Progress Umoh, our Girls Takeover Ambassador at the Embassy of Sweden in Nigeria! ✨

Last week, we proudly celebrated Progress Umoh, Speaker of Nigeria’s National Children’s Parliament, a shining symbol of leadership, confidence, and purpose, as she took over the office of Ambassador-Designate, Anna Westerholm for a day. 🌍

This inspiring , led by Plan International Nigeria in partnership with the Embassy of Sweden in Abuja, marked the International Day of the Girl Child 2025, spotlighting girls’ leadership, vision, and voice.

During the takeover, Progress engaged with Ambassador-Designate Anna Westerholm , who reaffirmed Sweden’s strong commitment to advancing gender equality and empowering girls to lead and thrive. Progress shared her vision for a Nigeria where every girl has the opportunity to learn, lead, and fulfil her potential.

💬 “If we truly want to make an impact in the lives of generations, if we truly believe education is power, then we must prioritise education and digital literacy for the girl child. She is the future and the now.” — Rt. Hon. Progress Umoh

Together, we’re building a world where girls learn, lead, and thrive. 💪✨

Across the world, girls aren’t waiting for change, they are leading it. Yet millions still face barriers that silence their potential: limited access to education, early marriage, and exclusion from leadership.

At Plan International Nigeria, we’re changing this reality by creating spaces where girls and young women can learn, lead, and thrive, ensuring their voices are heard, their rights protected, and their leadership recognised. 💪

As part of activities marking the International Day of the Girl Child 2025, themed “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead,” Plan International Nigeria, in partnership with the German Embassy in Abuja, spotlighted girls’ leadership through the initiative.

From the Ambassador’s residence to the Political, Military, and Administrative departments, Comfort Edmund took over as Ambassador for a day, chairing meetings, signing a symbolic Note Verbale to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and sharing her vision for a world where every girl has a voice, choice, and chance. 💙

💬 “I stand here as one, but I carry many voices, from classrooms without roofs, from communities where books are luxuries and from young hearts that have learned to dream in silence.” — Comfort Edmund, Girl Leader

The day culminated in a joint press briefing with Ambassador Annett Günther, who reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to advancing gender equality and supporting girls’ leadership:

💬 “Responsibility rests on the shoulders of those at the top and those at the bottom; together, we must make room for girls to lead.” — Ambassador Annett Günther

Together, we’re building a world where girls are not only seen and heard, but trusted, included, and empowered to lead. Because when girls rise, nations move forward. 💫

📢 International Day of the Girl Child 2025

Every October 11, the world marks the International Day of the Girl Child, a reminder that too many girls are still being denied their rights.

Today, in 2025, we are still counting:

✖️ 122 million girls worldwide are out of school.
✖️ 12 million girls are married every year before they turn 18.
✖️ In Nigeria, 42.6% of girls are married before 18, and women hold just 3.5% of seats in the National Assembly.

These are not just statistics. They are lost dreams, stolen futures, and silenced voices. But girls are not asking for charity. They are demanding what should already be theirs: the right to learn, to lead, to make decisions about their lives, and to thrive.

This year’s theme, “The girl I am, the change I lead: Girls on the frontlines of crisis”, is a call to see girls for who they truly are, not just for the challenges they face, but for the solutions they bring. From classrooms to communities, from tackling environmental challenges to fighting inequality, girls are already leading change.

On this International Day of the Girl Child, we are reminded that progress is only possible when every girl is given the chance to thrive. Education equips girls to transform generations. Protection guarantees their right to safety and dignity. And amplifying their voices affirms that their leadership is not for tomorrow, but for today.

Girls are not just the future. They are the present. And when girls rise, we all rise. 💙✨

⏳ to the International Day of the Girl Child! 💙

At Plan International Nigeria, we’re standing with girls everywhere, bold, brilliant, and breaking barriers. 💪✨

🎤 Their voices are powerful. 💭 Their dreams are valid. 🌍 Their leadership is now.

💫 Let’s make these possibilities possible. Are you with us? 🙌💙

👧🏽 Girls are not asking for charity. They are asking for a fair chance to learn, lead, decide, and thrive.

📢 This year, through our campaign, girls themselves are telling their stories, showing us why they matter, why their voices count, and why their futures cannot wait.

Their stories are not just reflections; they are a call to action for us all to educate, protect, and empower girls to take action and drive change.

💙 In Nigeria, empowering girls isn’t just the right thing to do; it’s one of the smartest investments in our country’s future.

When girls can learn, stay healthy, and take on leadership, the impact extends far beyond them: families move out of poverty, communities become healthier and more resilient, and society grows more just and equitable.

That is why Plan International Nigeria’s bold ambition is centred on girls. By investing in their education, well-being, and leadership, we are breaking cycles of poverty and creating ripple effects that transform entire communities.🌍👧🏽✨

🤝 At Plan International Nigeria, we believe partnerships are the bridge to scale impact. By joining forces with like-minded organisations, we unlock greater opportunities to advance the rights of girls and young women. 💙✨

Last week, our Country Director, Dr. Charles Usie welcomed Boladale Akin-Kolapo, Country Director of Girl Effect, and her team to our Country Office.

The conversation centred on deepening collaboration, strengthening programmes, and expanding reach to deliver lasting change for adolescent girls across Nigeria. 🌍👧

Together, we are stronger. Together, we can build a world where every girl is seen, heard, and supported to shape the future she deserves. 🌸
