The Registrar/CEO of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, MDCN, Prof Fatima Kyari paid a courtesy visit to the National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji in his office in Abuja.
Prof. Kyari's mentioned the background of the visit:
โข MDCN regulates the practice of medicine and dentistry in Nigeria with professional licensure and discipline, as well as medical and dental institutional accreditation.
โข With increasing digitisation of its operations, MDCN maintains both physical and electronic records, necessitating strong data protection.
โข The Council needs to guard against unlicensed individuals without required training infiltrating its register, through data authenticity and confidentiality.
The Registrar/CEO therefore sought the support of NDPC through the National Commissioner:
โข To strengthen collaboration on data protection and compliance.
โข For guidance on aligning MDCN data governance and digital health frameworks with the Nigeria Data Protection Act. Especially in securing professional and patients data, amid the increasing use of digital health tools, telemedicine and EMRs.
โข For technical support and capacity-building for MDCN staff on data handling and cybersecurity.
In his response, the NDPC Commissioner, Dr. Vincent Olatunji welcomed Prof Kyari's proactive approach and stated that health data are classified as personal identifiable data and sensitive information; whereby breach and use of such information could lead to discrimination or serious harm. Hence, handlers of personal information need specialised training. He said the Commission focuses on promoting compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act, building trust in digital health systems and providing technical support to MDAs and the private sector. The Commissioner has assured MDCN of partnership to develop tailor-made training for data protection compliance, and NDPC will participate in the MDCN committee to enhance the digital health and telemedicine practice guidelines.
