What is the main source of tuberculosis?
Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by a type of bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It spreads when a person with active TB disease in their lungs coughs or sneezes and someone else inhales the expelled droplets, which contains TB bacteria.
Risk factors for TB includes:
Poverty.
HIV infection.
Homelessness.
Being in jail or prison (where close contact can spread infection)
Substance abuse.
Taking medication that weakens the immune system.
Kidney disease and diabetes.
Facts about Tuberculosis
About one quarter of the world's population is infected with tuberculosis (TB) bacteria.
People with weakened immune systems have a much greater risk of falling ill from TB.
A person living with HIV is about 20 times more likely to develop active TB.
There are 3 Stages of TB,
Exposure, Latent, and Active Stage.
Precautions Includes;
Proper ventilation, as Tb can remain in the suspended air for several hours in a place devoid of ventilation.
Good hygiene such as covering of mouth while sneezing or coughing reduces the spread.
