*Prof. Ajayi Commends MDCAN FETHI for Professionalism at 2025 Biennial General Meeting and Scientific Conference*

The Chief Medical Director of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti (FETHI), Prof. Adekunle Ajayi, has commended the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), FETHI Chapter, for its professionalism, dedication and consistent contribution to the growth and progress of the hospital.

Prof. Ajayi gave the commendation while declaring open the association’s 2025 Biennial General Meeting (BGM) and Scientific Conference, themed “Physician Burnout in a Struggling Economy: Causes and Solutions in Nigerian Healthcare Context.”

In his remarks, the CMD described consultants as the backbone of the institution, noting that their expertise, leadership and unwavering commitment to excellence have significantly elevated the hospital’s clinical care, medical education and research standards.

The Chairman of MDCAN FETHI, Dr. Omotola Obajolowo, in his opening address, said the theme and sub-theme of the conference reflect a deep understanding of the prevailing socio-economic realities in Nigeria, describing them as both timely and essential to the well-being and professional development of doctors.

Similarly, the BGM Chairperson, Dr. Olufunke Bolaji, noted that both themes, physician burnout and healthcare digitalization, intersect in meaningful ways. She stressed that while digitalization can help reduce stress and restore balance when properly managed, it can also deepen fatigue if misapplied. “Our task,” she said, “is to ensure technology serves humanity and not the other way around.”

In his goodwill message, the Special Guest of Honour, Prof. Iheanyichukwu Okoro, Vice-Chancellor of Hillside University, Okemesi-Ekiti highlighted the challenges confronting
Nigeria’s health sector and called on the government to strengthen its support. He also urged medical personnel to live within their means and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Lateef Oluwole, an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, College of Medicine, Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, raised concern over the rising incidence of physician burnout, describing it as a serious threat to the healthcare system. He attributed the problem to economic hardship, poor remuneration, inadequate facilities and heavy workload, calling for improved healthcare funding, staff welfare and better support systems for doctors.

Also speaking on the sub-theme, “Transforming Healthcare: The Role of Artificial Intelligence and Digitalization in Medicine, 2025 and Beyond,” Dr. Victor Adeleye of the Department of Community Medicine, Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti emphasized the transformative power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital technology in enhancing patient care, diagnosis and treatment efficiency.

He, however, cautioned that proper implementation requires clear policy direction, data security frameworks and continuous training for healthcare professionals. Dr. Adeleye urged the government and institutions to invest in digital infrastructure and research, stressing that “AI is not here to replace doctors, but to empower them, to make healthcare smarter, faster and more patient-centered.”

The event also featured the presentation of an Award of Excellence to Prof. Okoro for his contributions to the medical profession, while Awards of Honour were presented to the guest speakers.

Goodwill messages were delivered by the Director of Administration, FETHI, Mrs. Foluso Adelegan, as well as representatives of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (FETHI Chapter), the Nigerian Medical Association (Ekiti State Chapter) and the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (Ekiti State Chapter).

In her vote of thanks, Dr. Olukemi Ojulowo expressed gratitude to the hospital management, guest speakers, MDCAN members and participants for their support and active involvement in the successful hosting of the event.
