The Power of a Nurse’s Smile

A nurse’s smile is more than grace,
It lights the darkest, coldest place.
It whispers gently, “you’re not alone,”
And turns a ward into a home.

It steadies hands that shake with fear,
It wipes away the hidden tear.
It carries hope through pain’s long mile,
The world is softer with that smile.

Through weary shifts and endless days,
It shines in quiet, humble ways.
No medal, crown, or jeweled attire,
Could match the warmth that smiles inspire.

It greets the dawn of newborn cries,
It comforts hearts when a loved one dies.
It bridges sorrow, eases strife,
And writes new chapters into life.

Behind each mask, behind each chart,
It speaks the language of the heart.
A simple curve, yet strong, worthwhile,
The soul is healed by a nurse’s smile.

So when the night feels long and wild,
Look for the nurse who simply smiled.
For in that gift, so pure, so true,
Lies strength to carry and care for you.

How does the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) guide nursing interventions? 🧠👩‍⚕️

The Glasgow Coma Scale is more than just a score—it’s a vital tool that helps nurses assess, monitor, and respond to changes in a patient’s neurological status.

🔹 Why it matters:
• It evaluates eye-opening, verbal response, and motor response, giving a clear picture of a patient’s level of consciousness.
• A declining GCS can be the first sign of deterioration, prompting urgent action.

🔹 How it guides nursing interventions:
• High GCS (13–15): Monitor closely, ensure safety, and provide frequent reassessments.
• Moderate GCS (9–12): Anticipate airway compromise, increase observation, and prepare for possible interventions.
• Low GCS (≤8): Prioritize airway, breathing, and circulation—often requiring intubation and intensive monitoring.

For nurses, the GCS is not just documentation—it’s a clinical compass that guides decision-making, escalation of care, and timely communication with the wider healthcare team.

👉 Question for my colleagues:
How often do you find yourself relying on GCS trends rather than a single score in patient management?

This is not just right.

Story of how a woman lost her twin baby because she couldn't afford 28k.

Last week, a heartbreaking story went viral on TikTok and X.

A pregnant woman in Abuja, unable to afford ₦28,000 for hospital admission, was seen trekking in active labor. Though a Good Samaritan helped her to a facility, it was too late — her twin babies had already died in the womb. She survived, but not without trauma, saying: *“Maybe me too would have even died.”

This tragedy is more than just a personal story. It reflects a bigger healthcare crisis:

Stillbirths are not only devastating losses for families — they also put mothers at higher risk of death.** When a baby dies in the womb, the mother faces risks like severe infection, hemorrhage, and prolonged labor.

➡️Financial barriers often delay or prevent women from getting timely obstetric care, especially in low-resource settings.

➡️ According to WHO, 2 million babies are stillborn every year, most in low- and middle-income countries — and many of these deaths are preventable.

🌍 The Greater Picture Solution

To reduce stillbirths and maternal deaths, we need a system-wide approach:

1. Universal Health Coverage (UHC): Affordable, accessible healthcare so no woman delays care because of ₦28,000.
2. Community Health Financing: Stronger maternal health insurance schemes and emergency funds at the community level.
3. Emergency Obstetric Care: Investment in referral systems, blood banks, and trained health workers who can act quickly in complications.
4. Public Awareness & Antenatal Care: Encouraging regular antenatal visits so risks can be identified early.
5. Policy Commitment:*Governments and stakeholders must prioritize maternal and newborn healthin national budgets and policies.

Every mother deserves a safe delivery. Every baby deserves a chance at life.

👉 Let’s move from sympathy to solutions. This story should fuel advocacy, policy change, and investment in maternal health — not just in Nigeria, but across Africa and other low-resource settings.

The Nurse Who Carried It All 🩺💙

She walks the hall with steady feet,
A thousand tasks her hands must meet.
Charts and meds, a patient’s call,
Yet somehow, she carries it all.

Pizza boxes, toys, and files,
A weary grin, but still she smiles.
Between the weight of work and care,
Her burden feels too much to bear.

Behind each laugh, behind each glance,
Lies sleepless nights, a heavy dance.
Of healing hands that never rest,
Of giving more, yet being pressed.

So when you see her standing tall,
Remember—she carries it all.
Not just the tools, or books, or gloves,
But human lives, with endless love.

When would you use a Nasogastric Tube (NGT) instead of a PEG Tube? 🤔

In clinical practice, the choice between a nasogastric tube (NGT) and a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube depends on the duration, indication, and patient’s overall condition.

âś… NGT is preferred when:
• Short-term feeding is required (usually less than 4–6 weeks).
• The patient needs temporary nutritional support after surgery, trauma, or during critical illness.
• There is a need for stomach decompression (e.g., bowel obstruction, gastric lavage).
• The patient’s swallowing function may recover soon.

⚠️ PEG is considered when:
• Long-term enteral feeding is required (more than 4–6 weeks).
• Patients have persistent swallowing difficulties (e.g., stroke, neurodegenerative diseases).
• There’s a need for safer, more comfortable, and sustainable feeding access.

👉 In simple terms:
• NGT = short-term, quick access.
• PEG = long-term, stable solution.

As healthcare professionals, choosing the right tube isn’t just a technical decision—it’s about patient safety, comfort, and quality of life.

đź”— Question for my network:
Have you found cases where a PEG was considered but an NGT turned out to be the better option (or vice versa)?
