Blood pressure is the force exerted by circulating blood against the walls of the arteries. High blood pressure also known as Hypertension is the increased force at which blood pumps from the heart to the arteries. A normal blood pressure reading is 120/80mmHg.When the blood pressure is high, the blood moves through the arteries more forcefully, this puts increased pressure on the delicate tissues in the arteries and damages them. Hypertension is also known as the “silent killer”, it doesn’t cause symptoms most times until there is a significant damage done to the heart.

YOUR EYE HEALTH MANTRA

Do you have an eye health mantra? Whether you've consciously thought about it or not, we all have habits and practices that impact our eye health. At Ailen Eye Centre, we're passionate about promoting proactive eye care to ensure your eyes shine brightly for a lifetime. Let's explore some essential eye care habits that can become your personal eye health mantra.

1. Regular Eye Check-ups: Your eyes, like the rest of your body, benefit from regular check-ups. Just as you visit your dentist or primary care physician, scheduling routine eye exams is crucial. These exams can detect eye conditions in their early stages, making treatment more effective.

2. Protect with Sunglasses: The sun's harmful UV rays can damage your eyes, just as they can harm your skin. Make wearing sunglasses with UV protection a part of your daily routine, especially when spending time outdoors. Your eyes will thank you for it.

3. Blink Breaks for Screen Time: In today's digital age, we spend hours in front of screens, be it computers, smartphones, or TVs. Remember to take "blink breaks" to reduce eye strain. Every 20 minutes, look away from your screen and blink several times to keep your eyes moist.

4. Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration is essential for overall health, including your eye health. Dehydration can lead to dry eyes, so make sure you're drinking enough water throughout the day.

5. Eat Eye-Friendly Foods: Your diet plays a significant role in maintaining good eye health. Incorporate foods rich in vitamins and nutrients like carrots, leafy greens, fish, and nuts into your meals. These foods support healthy vision.

6. Protect Your Eyes in Hazardous Environments: If you work in environments where your eyes are at risk of injury, wear appropriate protective eyewear. Safety goggles or glasses can prevent accidents and injuries.

7. Manage Chronic Health Conditions: Conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure can affect your eyes. Manage these conditions effectively through regular medical check-ups and follow your doctor's recommendations.

8. Quit Smoking: Smoking is harmful not only to your lungs but also to your eyes. It increases the risk of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Quitting smoking is a significant step toward preserving your vision.

9. Follow Contact Lens Care: If you wear contact lenses, follow proper hygiene and care guidelines. Clean and store your lenses as recommended by your optometrist to prevent eye infections.

10. Get Quality Sleep: Adequate sleep is essential for eye health. It allows your eyes to rest and rejuvenate. Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night.

At Ailen Eye Centre, we advocate for these healthy habits to ensure that your eyes remain in optimal condition. Your eye health mantra can be a combination of these practices that resonate with you. Remember, small changes in your daily routine can lead to a lifetime of clear vision and eye comfort.

Share your eye health mantra with us! What habits do you follow to take care of your eyes? Together, let's inspire and support each other on the journey to preserving and enhancing our precious gift of sight.

NAVIGATING EYE ALLERGIES: TIPS FOR RELIEF AND CARE FROM AILEN EYE CENTRE

Eye allergies, also known as allergic conjunctivitis, occur when your eyes react to allergens like pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or mold. These allergens trigger an immune response that leads to those uncomfortable symptoms you're all too familiar with – itching, redness, watering, and even puffiness.

Minimizing Exposure to Allergens

Minimizing your exposure to allergens is your first line of defense. Here are some practical steps you can take:

1. Keep Windows Closed: While the fresh air is tempting, keeping windows closed during high pollen seasons can reduce the influx of allergens into your living space.

2. Air Purifiers: Consider using air purifiers equipped with HEPA filters to capture allergens from the air.

3. Regular Cleaning: Regularly clean your home to reduce dust and pet dander. Vacuum with a HEPA filter and wash bedding frequently.

Relief Through Allergy Eye Drops

Over-the-counter or prescription allergy eye drops can provide welcome relief. These drops can help soothe itchiness, redness, and watery eyes. However, it's important to consult with a healthcare professional before using any eye drops, as they can recommend the best option for your specific needs.

Clean Hands, Clear Eyes

Frequently washing your hands can significantly reduce the transfer of allergens to your eyes. Avoid rubbing your eyes, as this can worsen the irritation and even lead to corneal abrasions. Instead, use a clean, damp cloth to gently soothe any itchiness.

When to Seek Professional Care at Ailen Eye Centre

While these tips can provide relief, persistent and severe eye allergy symptoms warrant professional attention. At Ailen Eye Centre, our experienced optometrists can provide expert guidance and personalized treatment options to manage your eye allergies effectively.

Your Eye Health Matters

Taking care of your eyes, especially during allergy seasons, is a responsibility that Ailen Eye Centre takes seriously. By following these tips and seeking help when needed, you're taking proactive steps to preserve your vision's clarity and comfort.

Don't let eye allergies dampen your enjoyment of the season. Experience the joy of clear, comfortable eyes with the support and care of Ailen Eye Centre. Join the conversation about eye allergies, share your experiences, and let's work together to ensure your eyes are allergy-free!
