Some parents are the problems their children are faced with!

A man brought his 19yrs old daughter to the Eye Clinic and insisted to be in the consulting room with her and he was obliged.

Clerking the patient, the man was speaking for the patient and barely allowed the girl to report her complaints in her own words. Though calm, you could see the girl was pi**ed and embarrassed.

Engaging the drama with diplomacy, the father was asked to allow his adult daughter say what her complaints were and answer questions by herself that may arise from clerking.

You could see that “African Parents” displeasure on his face while he swung his crossed legs, tapping it on the sit by his side and humming a hymn at the same time😂😂😂(An African Dad indeed).

What are your complaints the Doctor asked?

I don’t see things at far she replied.

For how long?

Since my childhood…

Have you ever seen a Doctor for it?

No…my Dad won’t let me.
He keeps saying there’s nothing wrong with my eyes and eye problem is not what we are known for in our lineage. He also said it’s because I watched TV alot.

I suffer frontal headache always with a pulling pain at the side of my ear. I tear, blink and suffer itching often.

So, how did you get to convince your dad to bring you to the clinic today?

I started saving for it since I got into the university and told myself I must sort it out now that I’m in 200L. It’s because we’re on holidays and I told him I want to go to the eye clinic myself, he decided to drive me here.

Okay, let’s get started with the comprehensive eye exam…

Please read/ call out the letters that will be appearing on the screen. It’s a Visual Acuity test to know how well you can see.

With this occluder, cover your LEFT EYE and read with your RIGHT EYE .

Okay Ma!
A…
V H
O…..O…
It’s not clear!
I can’t see further…

Same procedure was repeated for the left eye and she read same thing. She also couldn’t read the first two paragraph of the Near chart.

That was the 6/24 line she could read comfortably.
The second line on the snellens chart.

What do you mean that you can’t see?
Common, read that thing…
Me that’s here, I can see everything
Read it my friend!
Her dad hurled at her

I can’t see anything she insisted.

Please Sir, we are in the consulting room and I’m in charge now. Let her be, so we can get the best of results the doctor warned.

He crosses his legs again with a stern face this time.

Exams were concluded and she was able to read 6/5, the last line of the chart with refraction(glass test) and also read the the first paragraph of the Near chart effortlessly.

Her Dad still trying to put his words and emotions together, was curious to know the end of it.

Sir, she has a refractive Error and would be needing glasses to enhance her vision.

So, are you saying she wasn’t seeing those things then? Cos, I can see she was able to read all of them with that glass you put on her eyes.

Yes Sir, she wasn’t malingering at all.

When did the eye problem start?
I saw what she struggled to read when you started. That’s almost blindness na, he sacarstically added.

Hmmm, I’ll have to bring my other children too for check up. I thought she was joking all these years.

Next day…The whole family came for a comprehensive Eye exam and they were managed accordingly.

Two of her siblings had significant errors and were to get glasses .

Mum and Dad needed glasses too😂

They obviously made the history of wearing glasses in their lineage because they were better informed and had practical and clinical experience of it.

Dad kept feeling guilty of being responsible for how poor his daughter read the chart. I am the reason she’s not been seeing well all because I doubted her, he kept repeating…

A comprehensive Eye Exam is the only assessment to know how well an eye sees and how healthy the eyes is.

Don’t say you have good eyes if you haven’t had a comprehensive eye exam. You may be disappointed after an eye exam.

Ignorance is never an excuse!

Schedule your children for a comprehensive eye exam before they resume for the new academic session.

80% of all they do in school for learning is done with their eyes. If they are struggling with those eyes, their productivity will be affected.

Boost confidence in your children by giving them good vision.

Don’t be that parent that will rob your children of good vision.

Schedule an appointment with the Eye clinic!!!

ENDORSEMENT OF DR. VICTOR KELECHI ALICHE FOR VICE PRESIDENT (NORTH), NOA

As the outgoing Vice President South of the Nigerian Optometric Association (NOA), I, Dr. Chuks Odiase, proudly endorse Dr. Victor Kelechi Aliche for the position of Vice President North.

Dr. Aliche is a principled leader who consistently stands for truth, justice, and fairness. He has been a bold voice against oppression and intimidation, never shying away from speaking up very confidently for what is right. His passion for service and advocacy has earned him the respect of colleagues at the NEC and across the country.

I have no doubt that his leadership will bring renewed strength, transparency, and unity to the northern zone and to the NOA at large as he posseses the right personality that should be in the National Executive Council of the Nigerian Optometric Association. I urge all members to give him their full support.

Dear Friends

While digitization has eased our life, it has caused strain on our eyes. It's important that we start taking care of our eyes early rather than wait for problems to strike.

Here are some easy eye care tips for the digital era:

1) Avoid reading in dim lights or in dark.

2) Keep your computer screen at a distance of 20-25 inches with your eyes 4-6 inches above center.

3) Use the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to look at an object that is approximately 20 feet away. This will relieve the pressure on your eyes.

4) Adjust the brightness levels of your screen according to your surrounding lights.

5) Adjust text size to make your reading as comfortable as possible.

6) Use an anti-reflective lens/glass as it absorbs blue light.
