SHORTAGE OF HEALTH WORKERS IN NIGERIA – AN ONGOING PANDEMIC
Nigeria does not have doctors, nurses, midwives, pharmacists, laboratory scientists, and other cadre of health workers!
While the ACUTE SHORTAGE is being masked in Northern Nigeria because States don’t want to employ health workers who are not indigenes, in Southern Nigeria you have health workers who are either looking for work or getting ready to leave the country.
The Federal government employs a sizable but grossly inadequate number of health workers, while the States and Local Governments continue to struggle and need to ensure that they sit up to their responsibilities of employing qualified health workers.
The attached Statistics details it all except that it doesn’t say that a chunk of the doctors working in Nigeria actually work for public health organization (Donors, NGOS, etc) or Government Ministry, Departments, Parastatals and Agencies.
For effective and sustainable healthcare delivery, Nigerians must clamour for, and have adequate health workers equitable distributed at all levels of care (PHCs, General Hospitals, FMCs, Teaching Hospitals e.t.c).
Remember, Monkeypox can be prevented through proper personal hygiene practises such as handwashing and keeping surroundings free of rodents and stray animals/pets; prompt reporting and isolation of infected persons.
