DELIVERY OF QUADRUPLETS AND CARE PROVIDED BY FUHSTHA: A NATIONAL SUCCESS OF THE CEMONC PROGRAM — NHIA BAUCHI

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has commended the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Azare (FUHSTHA), for effectively implementing the Comprehensive Emergency Maternal, Obstetric and Neonatal Care (CEMONC) program, introduced under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Through this initiative, caesarean deliveries and essential medicines are provided free of charge within the first 48 hours, as part of efforts to reduce maternal and infant mortality.

The commendation was made by the Bauchi State Assistant Director of NHIA, Shamsuddeen Yahaya, during an official visit to the hospital on Monday, 22nd September, 2025.
The visit was to assess the condition of a 35-year-old mother of five, Hauwa Usman Gambaki, who recently delivered a set of quadruplets through caesarean section at FUHSTHA.

Yahaya described the successful delivery as a “National Success Story,” being the first time quadruplets were surgically delivered and comprehensively cared for at no cost under the CEMONC program. He praised the hospital for its excellent performance, noting the free provision of an amenity ward for the patient, as well as donations of childcare items by the Chief Medical Director’s (CMD) wife and other members of the community.

Responding to the delegation’s inquiries, the Chairman Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), Dr. Sani Abdullahi Giade, explained that it was the first time quadruplets had been surgically delivered at the hospital. He disclosed that the mother, who had not been receiving adequate antenatal care in her village, arrived at the hospital with blood loss. She was promptly diagnosed, taken to the theatre for caesarean section, and given blood transfusions.

Dr. Giade further noted that all expenses—including the surgery, blood transfusion, and essential drugs—were fully covered under the NHIA CEMONC program,
