A delegation from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Research Triangle Institute (RTI) Paid a courtesy call on Prof Idia Nibokun Ize Iyamu, Chief Medical Director, UBTH earlier today.
The purpose of the visit was to support the Acute Febrile Illness (AFI) surveillance programme by providing handsโon training on the use of Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs).
During her address, DrโฏNnenna Ananaba of the U.S. CDC, leader of the team informed the CMD that UBTH is one of six sentinel sites in Nigeria, representing the SouthโSouth zone. She thanked Hospital Management for its steadfast support of AFI surveillance and highlighted the projectโs pivotal role in detecting the recent dengue outbreak in Benin City.
DrโฏAnanaba also commended UBTH for its rapid response during the outbreak, noting that the hospitalโs testing of samples from across the state was a direct benefit of the capacity built through the surveillance initiative.
She explained that the training aims to introduce a simpler, faster, and more costโeffective RDT, replacing the current PCRโbased method.
In response, the CMD expressed gratitude to the visiting team for selecting UBTH and for offering free training to laboratory staff. She assured the delegation of continued institutional support to ensure the smooth continuation of AFI surveillance at UBTH.
