World Malaria Day 2026 | University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH)

Today, the University of Benin Teaching Hospital joins the global community in commemorating World Malaria Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness and strengthening the fight against one of the worldโ€™s most persistent public health challenges, malaria.

Malaria remains a major cause of illness and death, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, with children under five and pregnant women most at risk. Despite being preventable and treatable, the disease continues to place a heavy burden on families, communities, and healthcare systems.

At UBTH, we reaffirm our commitment to combating malaria through:

Prompt diagnosis and effective treatment

Public health education and community engagement

Promotion of preventive measures such as the use of insecticide-treated nets and environmental sanitation

Strengthening partnerships to enhance malaria control efforts

Prevention is key. Protect yourself and your loved ones by:
โœ” Sleeping under insecticide-treated nets
โœ” Keeping your environment clean and free of stagnant water
โœ” Seeking early medical care when symptoms such as fever, headache, and body weakness arise

Aligned with our UBTH CARES agenda, we continue to prioritize clinical excellence, community engagement, and sustainable healthcare delivery in the fight against malaria.

Together, we can eliminate malaria and build a healthier future for all.

In a significant step towards improving neonatal healthcare delivery, the management of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital led by the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Mrs. Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu, has successfully installed a 30KVA Central Processing Unit (CPU) at the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) within the facility.

This strategic intervention is aimed at ensuring uninterrupted power supply to this critical unit, where newborns requiring specialized medical attention, receive care.

With the installation, essential life-support equipment such as incubators, radiant warmers, and other specialist beds can now function seamlessly without the risk of power disruption.

The initiative underscores the hospitalโ€™s commitment under the UBTH CARES agenda to enhancing the quality of care provided to neonates, particularly those born preterm or with medical complications.

Reliable electricity is a cornerstone of effective neonatal care, and this upgrade significantly reduces the risks associated with power outages in such high-dependency unit.

This development marks yet another milestone in the hospitalโ€™s ongoing efforts to provide safe, efficient, and patient-centered care.

Every year on April 17, the world marks World Haemophilia Day to raise awareness about haemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders.

The theme for 2026 is: โ€œ๐——๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜€: ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—™๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐˜ ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฝ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—–๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ.โ€

This theme highlights a critical reality that many people living with bleeding disorders remain undiagnosed, and without diagnosis, access to proper treatment and care becomes impossible.

Early and accurate diagnosis is the foundation upon which effective management and improved quality of life are built.

At the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), we stand in solidarity with individuals living with haemophilia and their families. We recognize the urgent need to strengthen diagnostic capacity, improve awareness, and ensure timely access to care.

Haemophilia is a genetic bleeding disorder in which the blood does not clot properly, leading to prolonged bleeding. However, with early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, individuals living with haemophilia can lead healthy and productive lives.

At UBTH, we remain committed to:

* Promoting early detection and diagnosis
* Providing quality, comprehensive care
* Raising awareness within our communities

Together, we can bridge the gap in diagnosis and ensure that no one is left behind.

The University of Benin Teaching Hospital joins the global community in commemorating World Autism Awareness Day, a day set aside to raise awareness and promote acceptance of individuals living with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects communication, social interaction, and behavior.

Children with autism may perceive and respond to the world differently; however, being neuro-atypical does not diminish their worth or potential. On the contrary, many individuals with autism possess unique strengths, talents, and perspectives that can greatly enrich families, communities, and society at large.

This yearโ€™s theme, โ€œ๐™๐™๐™š๐™ข๐™š: ๐˜ผ๐™ช๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™จ๐™ข ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™ƒ๐™ช๐™ข๐™–๐™ฃ๐™ž๐™ฉ๐™ฎ โ€“ ๐™€๐™ซ๐™š๐™ง๐™ฎ ๐™‡๐™ž๐™›๐™š ๐™ƒ๐™–๐™จ ๐™‘๐™–๐™ก๐™ช๐™š,โ€ reminds us that every child, regardless of neurological differences, deserves dignity, respect, and opportunity.

Children with autism are valuable members of our society and, when given the right support, can make meaningful contributions in diverse fields.

Unfortunately, stigma, misconceptions, and lack of awareness continue to surround autism in many communities.

These barriers often delay diagnosis and limit access to appropriate care and support.

We strongly emphasize that autism is not caused by spiritual forces or parental wrongdoing. It is a medical condition that requires understanding, early identification, and professional intervention.

Early recognition and timely medical care can significantly improve outcomes.

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to seek help if a child shows signs such as delayed speech, poor eye contact, limited social interaction, or repetitive behaviors.

Early intervention can make a profound difference in a childโ€™s developmental trajectory.

At the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), we are committed to helping children with autism achieve their fullest potential.

Through early diagnosis, comprehensive assessment, and support from a multidisciplinary team, including pediatricians, neurologists, psychologists, speech and language therapists, and special educators, we provide holistic care tailored to each childโ€™s needs.

We also promote community integration and social support systems that enable children with autism to thrive in inclusive environments.

On this World Autism Awareness Day, we call on families, educators, policymakers, and the general public to:

- Show understanding, acceptance, and compassion toward individuals with autism

- Reject stigma and discrimination in all its forms

- Support early diagnosis and intervention

- Promote inclusive education and community participation

Together, let us build a society where every child is valued, every voice is heard, and every life truly matters.
