Common issues in pregnancy 😊

Pregnancy changes almost every system in your body, so some discomfort is normal. Here are the ones that come up most often:

First trimester (weeks 1-12):

1. Nausea/vomiting "morning sickness" - Can hit any time of day. Usually eases after week 14
2. Fatigue - Your body’s making the placenta. Rest when you can
3. Breast tenderness - Hormones preparing for milk
4. Frequent peeing - Uterus pressing on bladder + more blood flow
5. Food aversions/cravings - Normal, but mention to your doctor if you crave non-food items

Second trimester (weeks 13-27):

Often called the "easier" one, but still:
1. Heartburn - Progesterone relaxes the valve between stomach/esophagus
2. Round ligament pain - Sharp side pains as uterus grows
3. Backache - Center of gravity shifts
4. Leg cramps - Usually at night, often from low magnesium/calcium
5. Constipation - Hormones slow digestion + iron supplements can worsen it

Third trimester (weeks 28-40):

1. Swelling in feet/ankles - Some is normal, but sudden face/hand swelling needs checking
2. Shortness of breath - Baby pushes on diaphragm
3. Trouble sleeping - Hard to get comfortable + bathroom trips
4. Braxton Hicks - "Practice" contractions, irregular and not painful
5. Hemorrhoids - From pressure + constipation

Issues that need a doctor ASAP:

- Heavy bleeding or clots
- Severe belly pain or cramping
- Sudden swelling of face/hands, severe headache, vision changes - could be preeclampsia
- Fever over 38°C/100.4°F
- Painful urination - could be UTI, which is riskier in pregnancy
- Baby moving much less than usual after week 28
- Leaking fluid before 37 weeks

Managing the normal stuff:

Small frequent meals for nausea, ginger tea, staying hydrated. Fiber + water for constipation. Prenatal yoga or walking for back pain. Sleep on your left side with a pillow between knees.

Every pregnancy is different. What’s “normal” for one person might be a red flag for another. That’s why regular antenatal visits matter - your doctor/midwife can tell you what’s expected vs what needs attention.

Big thing to know first: *most people don’t get symptoms*. Especially women - about 50% have no signs. Men are more likely to notice something, but ∼10% still have no symptoms. So you can have it and spread it without knowing.

When symptoms do show up, it’s usually 2-14 days after exposure:

For people with a p***s:
- Burning or pain when peeing - often the first sign
- White, yellow, or green discharge from the p***s
- Painful or swollen testicles
- Sometimes re**al itching, discharge, or bleeding if from a**l s*x

For people with a va**na:
- Pain/burning when peeing
- Increased va**nal discharge that may be watery, creamy, or slightly green
- Bleeding between periods or after s*x
- Lower belly or pelvic pain
- Pain during s*x

Other areas:
- Re**um : Itching, discharge, soreness, bleeding, painful bowel movements. Often no symptoms
- Throat : Usually no symptoms, but can cause sore throat, swollen lymph nodes
- Eyes : Pain, sensitivity to light, pus-like discharge. Rare in adults, more serious in newborns

If untreated:
Can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease in women, epididymitis in men, joint infections, and infertility. In newborns it can cause blindness.

Because symptoms overlap with chlamydia, UTIs, and other conditions, and because so many cases are silent, testing is the only way to know for sure*. It’s a simple urine test or swab.

Cause of Gonorrhea 😊

The direct cause is a bacterium called _Neisseria gonorrhoeae_.

How it spreads:
1. Sexual contact - vag:nal, a**l, or oral s*x with someone who has the infection. The bacteria lives in semen, pre-cum, and va**nal fluids
2. Mother to baby - during childbirth if the mother is infected, which can cause eye infections in newborns

Important details:
- You can’t get it from toilet seats, swimming pools, or sharing food/drinks
- It needs warm, moist areas to survive, so casual contact doesn’t transmit it
- You can get it even if your partner has no symptoms
- Having it once doesn’t make you immune - you can get reinfected

Risk goes up with:
- Unprotected s*x
- Multiple or new s*xual partners
- Already having another STI
- Being under 25 and s*xually active

The bacteria itself is the cause, and s*xual activity is how it moves from person to person.

Using condoms and regular STI testing are the main ways to reduce risk. If you think you’ve been exposed, testing is the next step - it’s a simple urine test or swab.
