Asthma is a chronic condition that affects the airways in the lungs, causing them to become inflamed and narrow. This leads to symptoms like wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. The exact cause of asthma isn't fully understood, but it's believed to result from a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
✅ Common Causes and Triggers of Asthma:
1. Genetics (Family History)
Having a parent or sibling with asthma increases your risk.
Often associated with other allergic conditions like eczema or hay fever.
2. Allergens
Exposure to allergens can trigger asthma symptoms, especially in people with allergic asthma:
Dust mites
Pollen (from grasses, trees, weeds)
Pet dander (skin flakes from cats, dogs, etc.)
Mold spores
Cockroach droppings
3. Respiratory Infections
Viral infections like colds or the flu, especially in early childhood, can lead to or worsen asthma.
4. Air Pollution and Environmental Irritants
Smoke (from ci******es, cooking, burning trash)
Strong odors or chemical fumes (e.g., perfumes, cleaning products)
Industrial pollution
Vehicle exhaust
5. Weather Conditions
Cold air or sudden changes in weather
High humidity
6. Exercise (Exercise-Induced Asthma)
Especially when exercising in cold, dry air
7. Stress and Strong Emotions
Can cause hyperventilation or trigger symptoms in some individuals
8. Certain Medications
Aspirin or NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen)
Beta-blockers (used for blood pressure or heart conditions)
9. Food Allergies or Additives
Sulfites (preservatives in dried fruits, wine)
Certain food allergens (e.g., nuts, shellfish)
