Let me say this again, if you have completed the course of antibiotics and PPI's as prescribed, rest from drugs.

Concentrate more on your diet and lifestyle.

Avoid whatever it is that triggers you.

Focus on probiotics mostly from fermented and gut soothing foods

Trying to many things at a time as long as ulcer is concerned may end up worsening everything.

Be patient with yourself and allow your body to heal gradually

You will be fine

THINGS ULCER PATIENTS ARE TIRED OF HEARING EVERY DAY

If you’ve ever lived with ulcer, you’ll understand this deeply , People who don't know much about ulcer keeps saying things that are infact annoying.

Some even boast that they are not having ulcer because they've never stayed hungry.

Here are some of such

1) “It’s just ordinary stomach pain.”
No, it’s not. It burns, it aches, it disrupts sleep, appetite, work, and peace of mind.

2) “Stop thinking about it and it will go.”
Ulcer doesn’t disappear because you ignored it. In fact, stress makes it worst

3) “You worry too much.”
Imagine telling someone that's Living with daily discomfort that she' s worrying too much.
When you are only surviving

5) “Just eat anything.”
If only it were that simple. One wrong meal can mean hours of pain, nausea, or heartburn.

6) “You’re too young to have ulcer.”
Ulcer doesn’t check age, gender, or size before showing up.

6) “My neighbor had it and it went on its own.”
Every ulcer is different. What worked for someone else may harm another.

7) “You’re always complaining.”
When pain becomes a daily visitor, speaking up is not complaining—it’s coping.

8 )“Just take drugs and forget it.”
Healing an ulcer takes patience, lifestyle changes, diet control, and consistency—not shortcuts.

Dear ulcer patient:
Your pain is real. Your struggle is valid. You are not weak. You are strong for showing up every day despite the discomfort

Comment one thing people say that irritates you the most

WAYS TO MAKE FOODS TOLERABLE AS AN ULCER PATIENT

Having an ulcer doesn’t always mean the food is “bad.”

you must not avoid every food, infact you may suffer deficiency if you do so

Very often, how the food is prepared, eaten, and combined determines whether it will hurt or heal.

1. CHANGE HOW YOU COOK, NOT JUST WHAT YOU EAT
Many ulcer patients suffer because of cooking methods

Best cooking methods:
Boiling
Steaming
Stewing
Light grilling (no charring)

Avoid or limit:
Deep frying
Heavy oil frying
Burning or roasting till black
* Burnt and fried foods irritate the stomach lining and increase acid production.
Example:
Instead of fried fish → boiled or stewed fish
Instead of fried yam → boiled yam with light sauce

2. EAT FOODS SOFT AND EASY TO DIGEST
An ulcerated stomach hates stress — including hard-to-digest foods

Make food tolerable by:
Over-cooking slightly (until soft)
Mashing or blending when needed
Cutting food into small pieces
Ulcer-friendly textures:
Pap (ogi)
Custard
Rice porridge
Mashed potatoes
Soft swallow (well-cooked)
*Soft foods reduce stomach workload and pain.

3. REDUCE PEPPER, NOT JUST BECAUSE OF ITS SPICY

Pepper itself isn’t poison, but excess pepper inflames ulcers.
What to do:
Use pepper in very small amount, you can add f
Scent leaf (nchuanwu) and basil

* The goal is flavor without fire.

4. EAT SMALL PORTIONS, BUT MORE FREQUENTLY
Large meals stretch the stomach and increase acid.
Better approach:
Small meals at least every 4 hours
Don’t wait till you’re extremely hungry
Avoid overeating “because food is tolerable today”

* A calm stomach heals faster.

5. COMBINE FOODS WISELY
Some foods are okay alone but painful when combined wrongly.
Better combinations:
Carbohydrate + protein (rice + fish)
Pap + milk (if milk doesn’t trigger you)
Boiled yam + vegetable soup
Be careful with:
Acidic foods + oily foods
Heavy protein + peppery sauce
Peppered meat
Peppered kpomo

*Poor food pairing increases acid reflux and pain.

6. EAT SLOWLY AND CHEW VERY WELL
Digestion starts in the mouth.
Poor chewing makes the stomach work harder
Overworked stomach = more acid
Practice:
Put spoon down between bites
Chew until food is soft before swallowing

7. EAT AT THE RIGHT TEMPERATURE

Very hot is a no no especially for people with acid reflux, or gastritis. it worsens palpitations, burning and pains
Best is:
Warm or room-temperature food
Avoid:
Piping hot soups
Ice-cold drinks with meals

*Temperature shock can trigger pain instantly.

8. MODIFY TRIGGER FOODS INSTEAD OF REMOVING THEM COMPLETELY

Some foods are nutritious but irritating when eaten wrongly.
Examples:
Tomatoes → cook very well, remove skin
Beans → soak longer, cook until very soft
Vegetables → steam or cook lightly

*Modification is better than total elimination.

9. AVOID DRINKING TOO MUCH WATER DURING MEALS
Excess water dilutes digestive enzymes and worsens bloating.
Better practice:
Drink water 30 minutes before meals
Sip small amounts during meals
Drink more water after eating

10. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY (Ulcer Is Personal)
What works for one ulcer patient may hurt another.

Keep a simple food record:
_What you ate
_How it was prepared
_How you felt after
_Your stomach will teach you faster than any list.

REMEMBER:
Ulcer management is not about starvation or fear of food.

It is about gentle preparation, smart eating habits, and consistency.

When food becomes tolerable, healing becomes possible

NEW YEAR NEW YOU!!

Be honest, what have you decided to do differently this year to finally get rid of ulcer?

Someone told me he's been suffering from ulcer for almost 20 years!!!

You mean all that dizziness, burning, weakness, pains and all for 20 years???

“It's time to stop saying it's just ulcer, I’ll manage it.”

managing is not the same as healing.

So this year, let’s talk decisions — not wishes.

_ Decide to stop ignoring early symptoms
That burning pain, nausea, dizziness, or loss of appetite is not “normal.” It’s your stomach crying for help.

Decide to stop skipping meals
Starving all day and eating late at night only worsens ulcer. your stomach deserves small regular, gentle meals.

Decide to reduce stress, not just endure it
Stress doesn’t stay in your head — it settles in your stomach. This year, rest is not a luxury, it’s treatment.

Decide to be careful with painkillers Diclofenac, ibuprofen, Aspirin naproxen etc
Every one of these tablet that irritates the lining . No more popping drugs without medical guidance.

Decide to choose healing foods over triggering foods
Less spicy, less acidic, less alcohol. More soothing and nourishing meals:
More Pap
More Fufu
More Oatmeal
More Egg
More Soft meat
More Soft rice
More Yogurt

Decide to take treatment seriously and complete it.

Do the necessary tests

Stopping those antibiotics halfway is one reason ulcer has stayed till today

Most importantly — decide to listen to my body

Pain is a message, not an enemy.
This year is not about coping with ulcer.
It’s about breaking the cycle

So tell me…
What else have YOU decided to do differently this year to finally get rid of ulcer?

UNDERSTANDING HOW ULCER AFFECTS DAILY LIVING
(THIS GUIDE IS FOR PATIENTS, CAREGIVERS & FAMILY MEMBERS AND EMPLOYERS)

Before now, I use to look at ulcer as a common thing which just simply requires the patient to take their drugs, change their diet and then everything will become alright. Now I see it as something that's is significantly affecting people's daily living.

Infact some already left their jobs because they are unable to cope, therefore, Understanding this helps families, care givers and even employers give better care and helps patients feel supported—not blamed or misunderstood.

1. WHAT THE PATIENT MAY EXPERIENCE DAILY

A. Ongoing Stomach Pain
Ulcer causes Burning or aching pain in the upper abdomen
Pain may come when the stomach is empty, after meals, or at night

What family should understand:

Pain may come and go unexpectedly
The patient may look “fine” but still be in pain
Pain affects mood, patience, and concentration

How to Support them:
Be patient. Avoid saying “It’s just small pain.”

B. Eating Difficulties
It also comes with Fear of eating because food triggers pain
Poor appetite
Nausea, bloating, or early fullness

What caregivers should know:

The patient is not being “picky”
Forcing food can worsen symptoms
Skipping meals is often due to fear, not stubbornness

How to Support them:
Offer small, gentle meals and emotional reassurance.

C. Weakness and Easy Fatigue

Ulcer is know to cause Low energy due to poor nutrition or blood loss
Feeling tired even after resting

This causes:
Reduced ability to work, cook, or do chores
Needing frequent rest

How to Support them :
Help with tasks without making the patient feel useless.

D. Dizziness and Unsteadiness
What happens:
Lightheadedness, especially when standing
Risk of fainting

Why family awareness is important:

Patient may need assistance moving around
Driving or walking long distances may be unsafe

How to Support them : Encourage slow movements and hydration.

2. EFFECTS ON SLEEP AND REST
Most people with ulcer wakes with night pain, and
Acid reflux worsens when lying down causing
Poor sleep
Daytime tiredness
Increased irritability

How to Support them :
Make their dinner available early enough to avoid worsening reflux.

3. EMOTIONAL AND MENTAL HEALTH EFFECTS
ULcer patient may feel Anxiety about eating or pain
Fear of bleeding or worsening illness
Frustration or sadness
Feeling misunderstood

Family and caregivers should know that Emotional pain can be as heavy as physical pain
Constant illness can lead to depression

You can help them by:
Listen more. Reassure the patient they are not a burden.

5. WORK AND DAILY RESPONSIBILITIES
Ulcer is most times associated with
Reduced productivity
Frequent medical visits
Difficulty handling stress
For caregivers and employers:
Stress worsens ulcers
Understanding helps recovery

Employers can Encourage them by
Allowing them rest and flexible work schedules when possible

NOTE THAT
Ulcer patients are not lazy, dramatic, or difficult.
They are managing:
Pain
Fear
Fatigue
Emotional stress. THEREFORE,
Support, understanding, and patience speed healing

And to the Patients 💙
You are not weak.
Your symptoms are real.
With proper treatment, lifestyle care, and support, ulcers can heal, and daily life can improve
