DRY COUGH AND ACID REFLUX
I think dry persistent cough is one of the most commonest complaints from people having acid reflux.
A dry cough from acid reflux is usually something many people don’t expect, because they think reflux only causes chest burning. But in reality, reflux can affect the throat and even breathing too. Yes, it can affect breathing( we will talk on this later)
WHAT IS HAPPENING INSIDE YOUR BODY?
As we've discussed, in acid reflux, stomach contents don’t just stay in the stomach.
They move upward.
Because of pressure in the abdomen, the stomach pushes:
_acid
_gas
_tiny food particles
up into the food pipe and sometimes even up to the throat.
WHY DOES THIS CAUSE A DRY COUGH?
There are two main reasons:
1. Irritation of the throat
When acid reaches the throat, it irritates the lining of the throat.
You know, throat is not designed to handle acid like the stomach is.
So your body reacts by:
trying to “clear” the irritation
triggering a dry, persistent cough
This is why:
the cough is usually dry (no mucus)
it may feel like something is stuck in your throat
2. Nerve reflex from the esophagus
The food pipe (esophagus) and airways share connected nerves.
When acid irritates the esophagus, it can trigger a reflex cough, even if acid doesn’t fully reach the throat.
So sometimes:
you don’t feel heartburn
but you still keep coughing
HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT YOUR COUGH IS FROM REFLUX
For you to know if your cough is caused by acid reflux, check and see if:
_Cough is worse at night or when lying down
_Cough starts after eating
_You feel a sour taste in your mouth
_Frequent throat clearing
_Hoarseness (your voice sounds rough)
_Feeling of something “stuck” in your throat
Some people even think it is asthma or infection, but it is actually reflux.
HOW TO REDUCE THE DRY COUGH
1)REDUCE THE REFLUX ITSELF
Practically reducing cough associated with reflux also requires same steps to reduce the reflux itself:
Focus on reducing upward pressure and protecting your throat.
_ Eat in a way that reduces pressure
Eat small meals, not large ones
Eat slowly
Avoid lying down immediately after eating (wait at least 2–3 hours)
_. Improve your posture
Sit upright after meals
Avoid bending forward after eating
Raise your head slightly when sleeping
_ Reduce gas and bloating
Avoid foods that cause excess gas (for you personally)
Treat constipation early
Don’t overfill your stomach
2 CALM THE THROAT
_Warm water can soothe the throat and avoid irritation. Also taking several sips of water in a day help soothe throat
_Bananas are excellent for this. Eating them mostly towards evening helps not only soothe the throat but allows you get good sleep.
_ almond milk and coconut milk are better options if normal milk gives you issues.
_ Nuts are very healthy but chewing dry nuts like tiger nut, palm kernel, even dry coconut can be terrible right from the moment they enter your mouth. Tiny particles from these nut can irritate the throat so badly leaving you with even severe cough. You can blend and drink.
_Avoid very spicy, oily, or acidic foods if they trigger you
_Don’t keep clearing your throat harshly—it worsens irritation
3 MANAGE STRESS
This one I think is the hardest for people to implement.
Stress tightens your abdomen and increases pressure.
Simple things help:
deep breathing
light walking
proper rest and sleep
Remember
If your cough has been:
lasting for weeks
disturbing your sleep
or not improving
please see a doctor to confirm it is reflux and not something else.
