Drugs to AVOID While Breastfeeding

As your favourite pharmacist, this is something I always educate nursing mothers on.

Your breast milk is powerful, it nourishes, protects, and strengthens that special bond with your baby. 💞
But did you know that some medications can pass into your milk and harm your baby?

Here are 10 drugs to avoid (or only use under strict medical guidance):

1. Chloramphenicol
Can suppress your baby’s bone marrow — potentially life-threatening.

2. Tetracyclines
May discolor baby’s teeth and affect bone development.

3. Aspirin (High doses)
Linked to Reye’s syndrome ,a rare but serious illness in babies.

4. High-dose / IV Metronidazole
Can cause gastrointestinal upset and toxicity in babies.

5. Amiodarone
Affects thyroid function and can impact your baby’s heart.

6. Methotrexate & Cyclophosphamide
Very toxic cancer drugs — strictly not for breastfeeding mothers.

7. Ergotamine / Bromocriptine
Reduces milk supply + risk of seizures in babies.

8. Isotretinoin (Accutane)
Highly teratogenic ,absolutely contraindicated.

9. Lithium
Easily builds up in baby’s system, leading to potential toxicity.

10. Codeine / Tramadol
Can cause drowsiness, poor feeding, or even breathing problems.

✅ Always consult your pharmacist or doctor before taking any drug including over-the-counter (OTC) drugs.

🧠 Understanding Cerebral Palsy: A Guide for Parents

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a neurological condition that affects a child’s movement, muscle control, and balance. It’s usually caused by damage to the developing brain — often before birth, during delivery, or shortly after.

What Should Parents Look For?
Early signs of CP may include:
1. Delayed milestones (like sitting, crawling, or walking)

2.Muscle stiffness or unusual floppiness

3.Poor coordination or difficulty controlling movement

If you notice any of these, talk to your doctor. Early diagnosis and support can make a big difference.

What Causes It?
CP can result from several factors, including: Lack of oxygen during birth

Infections during pregnancy

Premature birth

Brain injury in early childhood

Is There a Cure?
There’s no cure for CP, but early intervention can help children thrive.
Treatment options include:
1. Physical therapy
To improve movement and strength

2. Occupational therapy
To support daily life skills

3.speech therapy
for communication and swallowing issues

4.Medications or surgery
When needed for muscle stiffness or other complications

With the right care and a loving support system, many children with CP grow up to live healthy, fulfilling lives.

Every child is unique and so is their journey.
If you’re a parent facing a CP diagnosis, know this: You are not alone. Support is out there, and hope is real.

🧴This is NOT eczema. It’s Tinea Versicolor.
As a pharmacist, I see this mistake all the time people treating fungal infections like eczema. But Tinea Versicolor requires a completely different approach.

Let’s break it down

What is Tinea Versicolor?
It’s a fungal skin infection caused by a yeast that naturally lives on the skin. When it overgrows (due to sweat, heat, oily skin, or weak immunity), it causes:

Light or dark patches

Dry, flaky, or itchy skin
Often on the chest, back, neck, and upper arms

💊 Treatment Approach
Use topical antifungal treatments (creams or lotions)

Wash with medicated cleansers recommended for fungal skin conditions

In severe or recurrent cases, oral medications may be necessary but only under medical supervision

Prevention Tips

Keep skin dry and cool

Avoid excessive sweating

Use antifungal body wash regularly if you're prone to flare-ups

Change out of sweaty clothes quickly

Avoid applying oily lotions to affected areas

As your favorite pharmacist and wellness Guide, I am here to help you treat your skin conditions the right way with expert knowledge and real care ♥️

Why Taking Antibiotics After Unprotected S*x Won’t Protect You From Most STIs

Hello everyone ♥️
As a pharmacist and health advocate, I want to clear up a common and risky misconception:

Taking antibiotics after unprotected s*x does not protect you from most STIs.

Let’s break it down clearly.

Antibiotics Only Work Against Bacteria and Not Viruses

Yes, some STIs are caused by bacteria, including:

Chlamydia

Gonorrhea

Syphilis

These can be treated with specific antibiotics but only after proper testing and medical supervision.

But here’s the important part:

Some of the most serious and incurable STIs are caused by viruses, like:

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)

Herpes (HSV)

Hepatitis B & C

HPV (Human Papillomavirus)

💊 Antibiotics have zero effect on these viruses.
They won’t stop infection, prevent transmission, or cure it.

Why Misusing Antibiotics is Harmful

Taking antibiotics “just in case” can:

Delay proper diagnosis

Contribute to antibiotic resistance

Mask symptoms, giving a false sense of security

✅ What To Do Instead After Unprotected S*x

1.Get Tested
Many STIs show no symptoms early on — but testing allows early treatment and protection.

2.Seek Medical Advice Promptly
A pharmacist or doctor can help determine if you need:

PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis for HIV)

Emergency contraception

3.Follow Up
Some STIs take time to appear in tests. Don’t skip follow-up screenings.

4. Use Condoms Consistently
They remain one of the most effective ways to prevent STIs and unplanned pregnancies.

Final Word from Your Pharmacist & Health Advocate 🌍💊✨

I am here to educate, guide, and empower you to make informed health decisions and not choices based on myths or fear.

Taking care of your s*xual health is not something to hide, it’s something to be proud of 💚
