Renal Assessment of newborn👀
As a midwife/nurse or student nurse/midwife you are expected to know the following👌:
1. Urine is produced in uterus between 9 and 10 weeks' gestation which increases with gestational age.
2.Observe the newborn for passage of urine in the birthing room, within 24hours or 48hours.
3. The commonest cause of delay in urine production is inadequate kidney perfusion, immature kidney and low glomerular filtration rate.
4. Ask the mother about the character of nappies and frequency. Around 4 to 6 wet nappies is an acceptable parameter in 24hours.
5.Newborn urine is odourless dilute and straw coloured.
6.Examination of antenatal records to ascertain the maternal history of oligohydrominos is important if the baby isn't passing enough urine.
