*Ability to locate health information, which may necessitate the use of a computer.
*Reading, writing, and math abilities
*Age, income, education, language abilities, and culture are all personal factors.

Health literacy is essential because it influences your ability to:
*Make sound health-related decisions.
*Get the medical attention you require. This includes preventative care, or disease prevention.
*Take your medications as directed.
*Controlling a disease, particularly a chronic disease
*Maintain a healthy lifestyle
Note: One thing you can do is ensure that you communicate effectively with your health-care providers. If you don't understand something a provider says to you, ask them to explain it to you. You can also request that the provider write down their instructions.
