Coal Camp Medical Centre (Dr C J Udeogu Memorial Specialist Hospital, Enugu) is a modern medical facility with special focus on gastrointestinal diseases. Our aim is the early detection of gastrointestinal cancers with the help of videoscopes. Gastrointestinal (GI) cancers affecting the oesophagus (gullet), stomach, colon and rectum collectively are the leading causes of cancer related death world

wide. There are well recognised pre-cancerous conditions that if detected (via endoscopy or colonoscopy) and treated can alter the natural history and prevent progression to cancer (malignancy) e.g. Barret's oesophagus and other oesophageal cancers, H Pylori infection, atrophic gastritis and gastric cancer, colorectal polyp disease and colorectal cancer. We do upper GI endoscopy (oesophagogastroduodenoscopy OGD), and lower GI endoscopy (colonoscopy). Upper GI endoscopy examines the oesophagus, the stomach and the duodenum. This is used to determine the cause of the following symptoms: abdominal pain, nausea, vommiting, swallowing difficulties, anaemia, gastroesophageal reflux, unexplained weight loss, bleeding in the upper GI tract. The lower GI endoscopy or colonoscopy is used to visualise the colon and the rectum in order to investigate the cause of blood in the stool, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, change in bowel habit or an abnormality found on computerised tomography (CT) scan. Individuals with previous history of polyps or colon cancers or colonic problems that may be associated with colon cancers (such as ulcerative colitis and colonic polyps) may be advised to have periodic colonoscopies because there is a greater risk for polyps or colon cancer.
