What is liver disease?
First of all let's us define what a liver is?
A liver is a vital organ found in vertebrates (any animal or human with backbone)which detoxifies various metabolites, synthesizes protein and produces biochemicals necessary for digestion and growth. The liver sits directly under our ribcage, in the right side of the abdomen. It is reddish brown in colour.
Liver disease is the abnormal condition of the liver that causes improper function or malfunction the liver.
Symptoms of Liver Disease .
1. Jaundice or yellowish skin or eye.
2. Abnormal pain or swelling.
3. Swelling in the legs and ankle
4. Itchy skin
5. Dark urine colour
6. Loss of appetite
7. Tendency to bruise easily
8. Chronic fatigue
Causes of Liver Disease
1. Infection by parasites and viruses.
2. Contact with infected person e.g hepatitis virus.
3. Immune system abnormalities.
4. Genetics
5. Cancer and other growths
6. Liver fat
7. Certain medications
8. Certain herbal compounds
Risk Factors of Liver Disease.
The factors that may increase your risk of liver disease includes:
1. Heavy alcohol use
2. Obesity
3. Insulin resistance
4. Tattoos or body piercing
5. Blood transfusion
6. Injecting drugs using shared needles
7. Unprotected s*x
8. Family history of liver disease
9. Exposure to certain toxins or chemicals
Prevention of Liver Disease
1. Drink alcohol moderately.
2. Avoid risky behavior i.e don't take chances with your body.
3. Use medication wisely.
4. Avoid too much use of aerosol sprays.
5. Maintain a healthy weight
6. Keep your food safe.
