This World Hepatitis Day 2025, we’re joining the global call to break the silence and break down the facts about Hepatitis.

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver, often caused by a virus — with five main types: A, B, C, D, and E.

Hepatitis B and C are the most dangerous because they can lead to chronic liver disease, liver cancer, and even death. Yet millions of people are living with it unknowingly, as symptoms often don’t show until it’s too late.

The good news is that hepatitis B is preventable through vaccination, and both B and C can be detected early through safe and simple screening.

This year’s theme, “Hepatitis: Let’s Break It Down,” is a reminder that knowledge is power. When we understand the risks, take action, and encourage others to do the same, we take a step closer to ending hepatitis.

In Jigawa State, Nigeria, cultural and religious beliefs play a strong role in shaping reproductive choices. These are perceptions and narratives that often require behavioural shift and empowerment through quality information. Recently, at the Central Mosque in Dantanoma, Gumel LGA, Jigawa State, MSI Nigeria Reproductive Choices hosted a women-only town hall session. The event brought together over 500 women, including 200 first-time mothers, for open discussions on childbirth spacing and reproductive wellbeing.

Working closely with respected Islamic leaders, including the Chief Imam of the Central Mosque, and other clerics, the conversations dealt with common questions from the participants. Those conversations relate to questions about family planning and what the Islamic teachings say about them. These were powerful voices of influence. It helped address misconceptions among women about modern family planning methods and highlighted relevant teachings on child spacing to protect the health and well-being of both mothers and children.

One way of providing choices is to increase information sharing among women and the entire community. An empowered community understands the need to remove all barriers that prevent families and women from accessing modern contraceptive methods. This is exactly what MSI Nigeria is doing in providing adequate and quality information that will enable women and their families to make informed choices about when and how to have their children.

MSI Nigeria Reproductive Choices proudly joined stakeholders and advocates at the maiden edition of the Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management (MHHM) Summit 2025 in Abuja. It was a high-level national gathering focused on breaking down the barriers that menstruation often places on the education, health, dignity and social wellbeing of women and girls.

Hosted by the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and convened by Wonder Woman Nigeria and Alora Pads, the summit brought together government officials, local and international development partners, private sector professionals, secondary school students, and community champions, who converged for a conversation towards advocacy for menstrual equity for all.

As part of our Reproductive Health and Pandemic Resilience (RHPR) project interventions, MSI Nigeria is committed to deepening the awareness, training and support provided to women and girls for improved menstrual health of all women. In the implementation states - Adamawa, Kebbi, Taraba, Zamfara and Katsina, MSI Nigeria collaborates with the state government on health systems strengthening to improve the capacity of health workers to better respond to the peculiar needs of women and girls in this area. Through trained providers, the project has integrated menstrual health and hygiene management into other services provided in the selected Primary Health Centres, such as: Cervical cancer screening and Preventative Therapy, Sexual and Gender Based Violence referral, and Family Planning Services.

During this event, our booth engaged participants with information on our wide range of sexual and reproductive health services, including menstrual health consultations.

Key messages we echoed throughout the day:

-Menstruation is natural and nothing to be ashamed of

-Menstrual health must be integrated into national policy and health budgets

-Communities thrive when girls and women are empowered to manage their periods with dignity
