Gombe State Commissions 114 Revitalised Primary Health Care Facilities
..as World Bank rates Gombe First in Prudence and quality of infrastructure

In a landmark effort to improve healthcare delivery in Gombe State, the Deputy Governor, Manassah Daniel Jatau,Ph.D, has officially commissioned 114 revitalised Primary Health Care (PHC) facilities at a ceremony held at Akko PHC. The project marks a major milestone in the administration’s drive to strengthen primary health care across the state.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, Dr.Jatau said the event was a testament to the administration’s deep commitment to the health and well-being of the people.

"To God be the glory and gratitude for granting us the privilege to witness this event that pertains to our health, without which none of human activities can manifest itself," he said, extending the governor’s greetings and appreciation to all attendees.

The Deputy Governor went on to highlighten the achievements in the health sector since Governor Inuwa Yahaya assumed office in 2019, where he noted several key milestones.

"Gombe State remains committed to improving the health and well-being of our citizens," he stated. "We have consistently increased funding for healthcare in our state budget from 3.5% in 2019 to 15% today, in line with the Abuja Declaration."

Other achievements include the establishment of the Gombe State Contributory Health Agency, with over 300,000 beneficiaries, and improved drug availability through the Drug Management Agency.

Dr. Jatau revealed that a total of 103 PHCs and an additional 66 health clinics have been revitalised with support from the World Bank’s IMPACT project. The upgraded facilities now have solar power, clean water supply, medical equipment, and staff accommodations.

"As we commission these facilities, I emphasise the need for local ownership and sustainability," he said. "We must work together to ensure that these facilities continue to serve our citizens for years to come."

Commissioner of Health, Dr. Habu Dahiru, in his overview, explained that the revitalisation programme was initiated to correct poor health indices in the state, particularly in maternal health, malnutrition, and zero-dose vaccination.

"This project is as a result of the commitment of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya to improve the health sector," Dr. Dahiru said, calling on traditional rulers and community leaders to encourage residents to make full use of the facilities.

Also speaking at the event, the Technical Team Lead of the IMPACT project, Dr. Onoriode Ezire, praised the Gombe State Government for its prudent use of resources.

"Gombe State has set an example by constructing high-quality health structures with little funds across Nigeria," he said.

Dr. Amina Abdu-One Mohammed, National Project Coordinator of IMPACT, stressed the importance of equipping health facilities with the right infrastructure, drugs, and personnel to ensure their success.

"Now that the structures, personnel, and drugs are in place, all stakeholders must ensure the people are aware and encouraged to access these services," she added.

The Chairman of the Governing Council of the Gombe State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Kashere, applauded the governor and his deputy for revitalising the clinics. He emphasised that the state government has been committed to improving living standards and urged residents to continue supporting the administration.

Also pledging their support were the Chairman of Akko Local Government Area,Alh.Danladi Adamu and the Lamido Gona, Alhaji Umar Abdulkadir Abdul Salam, who vowed to ensure the facilities are well-maintained and utilised by the people.

The event concluded with an inspection tour of the Akko PHC facility by the deputy governor and other dignitaries.

Gombe State Tops National Healthcare Access Ranking in 2025 PSPI Report

Gombe State has emerged as the leader in healthcare access in Nigeria, according to the newly released 2025 PCL State Performance Index (PSPI). The ranking places Gombe ahead of other high-performing states, including Akwa Ibom, Ondo, Kaduna, and Delta.

The findings highlight a crucial reality: the number of hospitals alone does not determine true healthcare access. Instead, access is shaped by a combination of factors including affordability, proximity, quality of care, and measurable health outcomes.
This underscores a key insight from the report: effective healthcare strategy and equitable distribution of resources matter just as much as infrastructure.

The PSPI evaluates states across multiple development indicators, including health, education, infrastructure, governance, and economic competitiveness. The 2025 edition offers policymakers, development partners, and private sector stakeholders a data-driven lens for decision-making and impact assessment.

The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Aisha Maigari, reiterated her ministry’s contribution to the fight against malnutrition, highlighting the Garin Inuwa food formula as an affordable, effective solution for children in underserved communities.

He also previewed plans for the upcoming October Measles/Rubella campaign and NIPDs, noting both accomplishments and areas needing improvement.

Dr. Nuhu Bile, the State Epidemiologist, provided updates on disease surveillance. He reported significant achievements in cholera control and increased measles vaccination coverage. However, he informed the gathering about isolated diphtheria cases that resulted in four deaths, stressing the need for heightened vigilance and rapid response.
