: Gombe Clinches Top Awards at National PHC Leadership Challenge..Bags $400,000 Reward

Gombe has clinched the special award for the Most Innovative State in Primary Health Care (PHC) at the 2023/2024 PHC Leadership Challenge organized by the Nigeria Governors' Forum (NGF) in partnership with UNICEF and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA).

The State also received a $400,000 reward for ranking as the second-best state in Primary Health Care Delivery in the Northeast subregion, further cementing its status as a leader in healthcare excellence.

Gombe was singled out for special honour, with the judges hailing the State's Biometric programme and other innovations as benchmark for other sub-nationals aspiring to revolutionize their healthcare systems.

The awards were presented during the 2023/2024 PHC Leadership Challenge Award/ Gala graced by dignitaries, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The event, supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Aliko Dangote Foundation, recognized and incentivized states that have demonstrated exceptional leadership in the delivery of primary health care services across Nigeria.

Vice President Shettima, represented by Presidential Adviser, Dr. Aliyu Modibbo Umar commended Gombe and other award winning states for their dedication to healthcare transformation, emphasizing the importance of leadership in achieving the universal health coverage and sustainable development goals.

In his keynote address, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, lauded the achievements of Gombe State and other award recipients during the event, emphasizing the impact of innovation and strong leadership in healthcare delivery.

Gombe State gets 3 Hilux Vehicles and 22 Motorcycles from Global Fund.

Gombe State Deputy Governor Dr.Manasa Daniel Jatau (PhD) has commissioned three Hilux Vehicles and 22 Motorcycles donated by Global Fund to fight Malaria, Tuberculosis, and ensuring primary health care delivery in the state.

The commissioning was performed at the premises of the deputy governor's office shortly after rising from the quarterly review meeting of the Gombe State Task Force on Immunisation and Primary Health Care (PHC)

During the meeting the committee members were updated on PHC key performance indicators and upcoming activities in the state, and they also shared fundamental priority strategic approaches and plans to improve PHC performance in the next quarter.

The deputy governor who is also the Chairman, State Task Force on Immunisation and PHC said, Gombe State is doing very well in health and will continue to do so.

Adding that, their concern was driven by the fact that health is critical to the development of every sector, urging the members of the Task Force to be more committed to their responsibilities for them to achieve their goals of providing quality healthcare to people in the state.

He expressed worry that the task force has failed in the area of antenatal and nutrition and reiterated the need to ensure that lapses are corrected at the next review meeting.

He called on the representative of the Nigeria Governor's Forum to inform the governors that this country must look inwards, that researchers must be engaged to source drugs and nutritious foods from local herbs, plants and crops otherwise people shall die, not because of disease but because the drugs are very expensive.

Speaking on the 440 health staff employed, the Deputy Governor said more are coming as government will continue to pay it's counterpart fund for the benefits of the people in the state
