🌍 Happy World Food Day 2025! 🍽️

This year’s theme, “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future,” is an excellent reminder that transforming food systems requires collaboration across all levels, from global partnerships to community-led action.

Nevertheless, at NLN, while we plan projects and engage in initiatives, we support the evidence that resilient food systems are built not for communities, but with them. While global coordination is essential, the most sustainable and lasting change will (and continue to) happen when local communities and stakeholders (those most affected by food insecurity) are meaningfully involved for Better Production, Better Nutrition, Better Environment, and Better Life.

As we reflect on this year’s theme, let’s remember:
🤝 Stronger systems are built when every hand counts.
🪴 Food security begins at the community level.
🗣️ “Nothing about us, without us.”

We featured on the pledge map and received official recognition from WABA (World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action) for our outreach during World Breastfeeding Week 2025!

WABA is a globally recognised organisation working in collaboration with WHO and UNICEF to promote, protect, and support breastfeeding through evidence-based, community-led action.

At the heart of our work is the use of behaviour change communication strategies, and this year, we demonstrated this by applying the Health Belief Model across three outreach centres, reaching almost 100 women and launching a sustainable peer support group for continued impact.

A heartfelt thank you to the Department of Human Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Calabar, every volunteer, stakeholder, and health worker who made this possible.

*To the glory of God, our 3-Day World Breastfeeding Week outreach was a success!* 🙌🏾

We’re deeply grateful to every volunteer, healthcare professional, health centre, and mother who helped bring this vision to life.

Over the next few days, we’ll be sharing highlights from this incredible journey, but here’s a quick snapshot:

📌 A theory-led outreach, guided by the Health Belief Model, to promote meaningful behaviour change.

📌Capacity-building sessions to equip all volunteers with the skills and confidence to engage effectively.

📌Outreach activities across three locations on three different days, reaching a diverse group of mothers.

📌 The launch of peer support groups to provide ongoing encouragement and connection to outlast the event.

Excited to share incredible highlights from the sessions in subsequent posts!

💡 Highlights of our Capacity Building Session!

What was meant to be a simple capacity-building session became a full-blown lecture and practical demonstration! Why? Because we believe that no one should step into the field unprepared, especially when lives are involved.
The Health Belief Model guides our outreach, and to truly make an impact, every volunteer needs to be clear on:
✔️ What the evidence says
✔️ What we are saying
✔️ Why we’re saying it
✔️ And how to say it in a way that builds trust and confidence.

🙏 Huge thanks to all our speakers, including Prof. Ene-Obong, Prof Williams, Andyno Akpanukoh, Mfon Essien, Peace Udoh, Feyisayo Olufemi, Stephanie Inyang, Praise Ademide, Opeyemi, and the entire coordination team.
🙌🏾 A big shoutout to our incredible volunteers! Your energy, dedication, and willingness to practise, practise, practise made this what it was.

Now, it’s time. We’re ready.
Let the outreach begin.

*Happy World Breastfeeding Week!* 🌍🤱🏽
At NutriLife Nigeria, we’re actively engaging with initiatives based on scientific and context-specific evidence and guided by a single aim: to increase the self-efficacy of mothers to initiate and continue breastfeeding, *rather than just increasing their knowledge.*
Here’s what to expect from us this week:

📚 *Evidence-Based Interventions*
Our outreach strategy is rooted in the Health Belief Model (HBM), emphasising three key constructs identified by research in Nigeria that influence breastfeeding decisions. *The aim is to complement rather than replicate what is already happening in existing Primary Health Care Centres.*

🏘️ *Community Entry & Contextual Planning*
Each community we engage with is carefully identified, and every message is designed to reflect real, lived experiences. This ensures the support we offer is relevant, respectful, and effective.

🎓 *Capacity Building for Volunteers*
We’ve developed a comprehensive training manual based on peer-reviewed literature and the National MIYCN Guidelines. Each volunteer will be provided with practical, culturally adapted knowledge before entering the field.

📍 *Outreach activities in Ibadan and Calabar*
We will be providing practical support in two cities. This is in collaboration with the Department of Human Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Calabar. 💪🏽

✨ *There’s still time to get involved!*
If you’d like to be part of this outreach, send us a message. Our capacity-building sessions are yet to be held, and we’d love passionate individuals to join the team.

🔔 *Stay tuned!* We will be sharing behind-the-scenes updates, community stories, tips, and lessons from our outreaches!

It is no longer news that the nutrition situation in Nigeria is not pretty. Ranking second highest globally and first in Africa for malnourished children is a harsh reality.😞

A typical example is the poor and suboptimal infant feeding practices in the country despite global efforts.
Regardless of the impressive and intense nutrition education programs that emphasize the need for improved practices, the real issue remains that in many communities, challenges like misconceptions and myths continue to hinder progress.

For this reason, targeted actions to tackle unique challenges and misconceptions and reinforce facts must be prioritized over repeating the same old messages during nutrition education programs.

It is no longer a case of what we know, but a case of addressing the challenges that stop us from practicing what we know.👏🏾

Now here's your challenge: Is the information in the image a common misconception or a fact? Share your thoughts, and bonus points if you explain why! 😄
