Congratulations to us for the successful delivery of the 15th set of twins in this ongoing 2025 at Academy Hospital. In the last 10 years (since our inception on 1st October, 2015), we have taken delivery of 65 sets of twin gestations (pregnancy with two babies), resulting in addition 130 cute Tayes, Kehindes, Okechukwus, Onyinyes, Hassans, Hussains, to our growing population in the last 10 year.
One of the frequently asked questions regarding twin gestation deliveries is: Why do we prefer Cesarean Section (CS) over normal vaginal delivery for twin gestations.
Here are the main reasons?
1. Abnormal presentation: Twins often do not both lie head-down (cephalic). If the first twin or second twin is breech, transverse, or oblique, vaginal delivery can be risky
2. Fetal distress or cord problems. There’s a higher chance of fetal distress (lack of oxygen) during labor. The umbilical cords can get compressed or tangled, especially after the first twin is delivered.
3. Prematurity and low birth weight. Twins are often born preterm, and premature babies are more vulnerable to the stress of labor. A CS is sometimes preferred to reduce trauma to the babies.
4. Shared placenta or twin complications. In monochorionic twins (sharing one placenta), there may be twin-to-twin transfusion or vascular connection problems. Monoamniotic twins (sharing one sac) have cords that can easily entangle— CS is safest.
5. Maternal factors. If the mother has conditions like hypertension, preeclampsia, previous CS, or exhaustion during labor, CS may be safer.
✅ In summary, CS in twin pregnancy is performed mainly to prevent complications for the babies and mother, especially when the presentation, placenta, or labor progress is abnormal.
