Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread
Lord it is a new day
and my pocket is empty.
I have a wife and six extra mouths to feed.
I am threatened every day with being laid off at wok
I am overworked and underpaid
Yet I can complain to no one
The rich are getting richer and
they don’t care about me or my hunger.
I look on as they feast on the best
available food, hoping to catch the left overs
SAP has increased the numbers of those
of us struggling for the left overs
But to Government and others we are merely
statistics as nobody cares if we swim or sink.
O God our help in ages past
Our hope for years to come
Stand by us when hunger and starvation come, and
GIVE US ALWAYS OUR DAILY BREAD.
Isaac Olaoluwa Akinyele,
Give us our daily bread: An Inaugural lecture delivered at the University of Ibadan on 4 February 1993
Late Prof. Isaac Olaolu Akinyele founded Food Basket Foundation International (FBFI) in 1989. In his 1993 inaugural lecture at the University of Ibadan, he spoke to issues of food and nutrition security, the primary reason FBFI was founded, issues still relevant today 10 years after his demise.
Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread seems to be the cry of our nation, Nigeria, today with rising costs of food with additional threats to accessibility, availability, and ability to successfully utilize it, treading the treacherous path of nutrition insecurity with potential long term health issues.
We must work together to find sustainable and lasting solutions to issues of food and nutrition insecurity, poverty, and misery.
