Nigeria had a thriving weaving tradition that dates back to the fifteenth century before the first European voyagers visited West Africa. A large percentage of male weavers who use the horizontal narrow strip loom were found in the most important weaving centres, Iseyin, Oyo, Oshogbo and Ilorin. Iseyin weavers, renowned for their craftsmanship, often migrated into different regions forming smaller weaving communities.

Despite the decline of this craft due to the increasing influence of Western fashion and availability of cheaper alternatives, Yoruba weaving remains a lineage craft with the skills passed on through generations within families.
