The Nigerian Orthopaedic Association (NOA) on Thursday, 27th November 2025, organised its 48th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference with the Musculoskeletal Infections: Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment and with two major sub-themes: Open Fracture Care: Challenges and Solutions and "Total Hip Replacement (THR) in Sickle Cell Disease Patients: Strategies, Challenges and Outcomes, at the Mahattan Hall And Signature Tower Hotel And Suites, Jericho, Ibadan, Oyo State.
In his welcome address, the President, Nigerian Orthopaedic Association, Prof. Sydney Ibeanusi, stated that musculoskeletal infections impose significant burdens on patients, healthcare systems, and communities, particularly in the region. He accentuated the need for effective prevention and management strategies to address the issue.

Speaking at the event, the Honourable Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako represented by the Chief Medical Director, University College Hospital Ibadan, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo said that musculoskeletal infections remain a major and growing concern in Africa, particularly in Nigeria, where late presentation, unlimited diagnostic resources, antimicrobial resistance, and the burden of trauma all converged to create significant challenges.
"The ministry of health acknowledged the existing gap particularly in the rural and resource-limited settings and to address these, we are pursing to strengthen the National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System for timely transport and early intervention, Expanding the capacity for infection control in surgical facilities, Support the upgrade of Orthopaedic and Trauma Units with essential consumables and imaging equipment and Encourage the standardised protocols across institutions to improve outcomes," the Minister affirmed.
