NIGERIAN ORTHOPAEDIC ASSOCIATION (NOA) ORGANISES 48TH AGM AND SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE

The Nigerian Orthopaedic Association (NOA) on Thursday, 27th November 2025, organised its 48th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference with the Musculoskeletal Infections: Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment and with two major sub-themes: Open Fracture Care: Challenges and Solutions and "Total Hip Replacement (THR) in Sickle Cell Disease Patients: Strategies, Challenges and Outcomes, at the Mahattan Hall And Signature Tower Hotel And Suites, Jericho, Ibadan, Oyo State.

In his welcome address, the President, Nigerian Orthopaedic Association, Prof. Sydney Ibeanusi, stated that musculoskeletal infections impose significant burdens on patients, healthcare systems, and communities, particularly in the region. He accentuated the need for effective prevention and management strategies to address the issue.

"This conference will also focus on key areas, including Open Fracture Care and Total Hip Replacement in patients with sickle cell disease, concentrating on the need for innovative and context-appropriate solutions to tackle these challenges." Prof. Ibeanusi said.

Speaking at the event, the Honourable Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako represented by the Chief Medical Director, University College Hospital Ibadan, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo said that musculoskeletal infections remain a major and growing concern in Africa, particularly in Nigeria, where late presentation, unlimited diagnostic resources, antimicrobial resistance, and the burden of trauma all converged to create significant challenges.

"The ministry of health acknowledged the existing gap particularly in the rural and resource-limited settings and to address these, we are pursing to strengthen the National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System for timely transport and early intervention, Expanding the capacity for infection control in surgical facilities, Support the upgrade of Orthopaedic and Trauma Units with essential consumables and imaging equipment and Encourage the standardised protocols across institutions to improve outcomes," the Minister affirmed.

NIGERIA CANCER SOCIETY PAYS COURTESY VISIT TO UCH CMD

The University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, received the leadership of the Nigeria Cancer Society (NCS) during a courtesy visit to the Chief Medical Director (CMD) on November 26th, 2025, at the CMD's office.

The delegates were led to the CMD's office by Dr. Foluke Sarimiye, a consultant oncologist and the newly appointed chairperson of the Oyo State Chapter of the Nigeria Cancer Society.

The National Chairman of Nigeria Cancer Society, Prof. Abidemi Omonisi warmly commended the CMD for successfully completing his tenure as the President of the Society for Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Nigeria (SOGHIN). He applauded him for his outstanding performance and exemplary leadership styles.

During the visit, Prof. Abidemi Omonisi congratulated the CMD on his distinguished leadership and formally introduced the newly appointed Oyo State Chairman of the Society. He also conferred on the CMD the honorary position of Elder of the Oyo State Chapter of the NCS in recognition of his outstanding contributions to healthcare.

The National President highlighted the remarkable expansion of the Society, stating that NCS now has active chapters in all 36 states of the federation and 14 branches globally. He noted that the Oyo State Chapter is strategically positioned and open to bringing cancer care to the grassroots, ensuring that awareness, prevention, and early detection reach communities at all levels.

He further appealed to the UCH management for support in recruiting new members and strengthening both national and international collaborations that will enhance cancer control efforts.

In his response, the Chief Medical Director, CMD, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo expressed profound appreciation for the honour bestowed upon him. He described UCH as “an origin in the field of medicine” and thanked the Nigeria Cancer Society for recognizing UCH as an important national healthcare entity. He reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to partnerships that advance medical care and public health.

The CMD assured the delegation of UCH’s unwavering support, emphasising that the hospital remains dedicated to collaborative initiatives aimed at improving cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, and support services across Nigeria.

SOGON EXECUTIVE PAYS UCH MANAGEMENT COURTESY VISIT.

The National Executive Council of the Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria and the LOC of SOGON Oluyole 2025 Conference, paid the UCH Management a courtesy visit on Wednesday, November 26th, 2025, at the boardroom of the Hospital.

The President of SOGON Nigeria, Prof. Okechukwu Ikpeze in his speech acknowledged the management's incredible support towards the association.

He stated that the courtesy visit, was to flag off the 59th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the association and also the 60th Anniversary of SOGON.

He further stated that the association was established in 1965, with the vision that Nigerian women, would achieve the highest possible standards of Physical, Mental, Reproductive and Sexual health and well-being throughout their lives.

The association thereafter donated 4 monitors and 3 dozens of plastic chairs to the Antenatal Clinic of the Hospital.

The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo in his response congratulated the association on their Sexagenarian anniversary.
He pledges the management's continuous support towards the association and wished them a successful celebration.

INSTITUTE OF NEUROSCIENCE PAYS UCH MANAGEMENT A COURTESY VISIT

The Institute of Neuroscience paid a courtesy visit to the management of the hospital on Tuesday, 25th November 2025, at the office of the Chief Medical Director (CMD).

Speaking during the visit, Prof. Augustin Adeolu expressed his appreciation to the CMD for approving his assumption of duty as the Executive Head of the Institute. He further highlighted details about the institute as well as challenges and areas where the management needs to intervene.
Prof Adeolu noted that the Institute, which began as Clinical Neurosciences and received approval in 1992, has grown through collaborative clinical activities and related fields. This evolution, he explained, led to the establishment of the Neuroscience Institute, whose core mandate is to enhance the status of the hospital by contributing significantly to quality healthcare service delivery.

In his remarks, the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, welcomed the delegation and expressed his delight at their visit. He reaffirmed the hospital’s readiness to deepen collaboration with the Institute and assured them of his continued support within his capacity.

NEST 360 DONATES SOLAR INVERTER

The Newborn Essential Solutions and Technology (NEST 360) has donated, installed, and commissioned a 60KVA solar inverter system for the Special Care Baby Unit and the C1 Second Ward of the hospital. The commissioning took place on Friday, 21st November 2025.

Speaking at the event, the Clinical Lead, Prof. Chinyere Ezeaka, noted that the solar inverter is a valuable addition to the hospital’s existing power infrastructure. She explained that a survey conducted by the team revealed that power supply remains a major challenge the hospital faces in delivering effective neonatal care, hence the need for the donation.

Prof. Ezeaka expressed gratitude for the partnership, saying, “On behalf of NEST 360, we appreciate you for the warm reception and collaboration.”

The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, along with other members of management, gave NEST 360 a standing ovation to commend the organization for its consistency and dedication in supporting the hospital through regular donations

UCH HOLDS INDUCTION AND CONVOCATION CEREMONY

The University College hospital, Ibadan held a joint induction and convocation for Oyo State College of Science and Technology, Eleyele and The School of Health Information Management (SHIM), UCH on Thursday, 13th November, 2025 at the Nurse' Tutors Course Hall, University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.

Representing the Registrar of the Health Records Officers Registration Board of Nigeria, Alhaji Babagana Mustapha, Dr. Benson Orogbole advised the inductees to remain disciplined and committed in the discharge of their professional duties.

The Provost of the School and Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), Professor Olubukola Adesina, urged the graduands to uphold the institution’s vision of excellence in their future endeavours. She encouraged them to embrace integrity, empathy, continuous hard work, and lifelong learning as they transition into the evolving healthcare landscape. According to her, their academic and personal achievements serve as a solid foundation for impactful careers ahead.

The Head of the School, Mr. Olufemi Omolade, expressed profound gratitude to all stakeholders UCH Management, School Management, students, graduands, lecturers, and parents for their immense contributions to the success of the students.

In his remarks, the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, congratulated the graduating students on “achieving this remarkable milestone in their academic journey.” He emphasized the indispensable role of information management in modern healthcare, particularly in an era driven by digital transformation. He noted that timely, accurate, and secure health information is essential for delivering quality healthcare services.
