OUR SUPPOSED IROKO TREE

I grew up to meet a certain tree standing tall in front of my grandpa’s house — so huge, I often thought it was an Iroko tree, though it wasn’t. I was very close to my grandpa, but as a child, my thoughts weren’t mature enough to ask him the story behind that tree before he passed. May his gentle soul continue to rest in peace.

One quiet Wednesday night, while chatting with my dad after he returned from work, the memory of the tree flashed through my mind. I asked, “Dad, what’s the story behind the tree in front of Grandpa’s house?”

He smiled, then told me how Grandpa had once travelled to another town and returned with a small seedling. That seedling eventually grew into the mighty tree we all know. A friend had once advised Grandpa to cut it down, warning that reptiles could find shelter there. But Grandpa refused. He loved the cool shade it provided — a place of comfort for him and his friends. And truly, the tree stood beautifully, almost like it was guarding the house.

Years later, after a church service, I decided to visit Grandpa’s house. As I approached, I noticed something alarming — one of the tree’s massive roots had crept into the building’s foundation. Knowing how dangerous this could be, I immediately called my dad. He came without delay.

Upon inspection, we discovered that the roots had severely damaged the structure beneath, threatening the safety of the entire building. Without hesitation, my dad ordered the tree to be brought down.

We began the process. To our shock, as the tree came down, numerous reptiles — snakes, lizards, and more — emerged. Some were killed, others escaped. But finally, the tree — our supposed Iroko — was no more.

My dad worked day and night, spending time, energy, and money to repair the damage. Gradually, the house regained its dignity. Passersby, surprised by the transformation, even asked if we had just built the house — for many had only seen the tree, never the home it had hidden.

If Grandpa were still here, I would say to him, “Grandpa, come and see the damage your little seedling has caused!” But I believe he’s watching us from the great beyond.

Today, fresh air flows freely around the house. Light has returned. Good things now find their way to the place once shadowed by that tree.

Our supposed Iroko tree is gone — and in its place, peace has returned.

IJEBU REWA TOUR: DONE AND DUSTED!

All glory be to the Almighty for the success of our memorable tour to Ile Ife!

We took off around 2PM on Friday, and the journey from Ijebu Ode to Ile Ife was nothing short of exciting. From the moment we hit the road, it was fun, laughter, and good vibes all through.

Our stay in Ile Ife was filled with warmth, engaging conversations, and a strong sense of unity — we bonded like a big family. One of the highlights was sharing meals together at the popular Abula joint — a truly unforgettable experience.
The Federation of Ijebu-Remo Students Association, Obafemi Awolowo University, Eniola Oluwatosin JAMIU, President and Adesanya Omowunmi Victoria, Vice President on behalf of the association paid us a courtesy visit.
Saturday morning kicked off with a lively drill session filled with exercise, dancing, and plenty of fun. Later, we explored the ancient city of Ile Ife, visiting historical sites and learning about various deities that shape the rich cultural heritage of the town.

We’re grateful to report that the entire trip — to and fro — was safe, with no accidents or incidents recorded.

A heartfelt thank you to every participant for making this tour an incredible one.

ONTO THE NEXT TOUR: IBRAHIM CHATTA FILM VILLAGE!

Let’s make it bigger and better!

LEGITIMACY OF THE DECENDANTS OF PRINCE FASASI ADEBISI ADEYEMI, OLORI EBI FUSEHENGBUWA RULING HOUSE FOR AWUJALE STOOL

By: Olajire Ajayi
There is no dispute about the legitimacy of the descendants of the late Prince Fasasi Adebisi Adeyemi
-Olori Ebi of the Fushengbuwa Ruling House from 1999 to 2013-for consideration for the Awujale stool, irrespective of any internal conversations over current or past leadership within the ruling house.
Prince Fasasi Adebisi Adeyemi's leadership of the Fushengbuwa ruling house for 14 uninterrupted years remains a matter of public record and community acknowledgment. His position was never legally contested during his tenure, establishing him as a de facto and de jure representative of the house. His descendants represent a direct continuation of a formally recognized head of the ruling house. Their claim is rooted in the principle of hereditary succession and sustained representation, which traditional institutions honor as part of preserving legacy, stability, and cultural legitimacy.
Under Yoruba customary practice, the right to the throne is vested in bonafide male descendants of ruling houses, not in transient or potentially contested administrative positions within those houses.
Thus, regardless of current or past house leadership squabbles, the lineage of a recognized past head remains eligible. Prince Fasasi Adebisi Adeyemi was known for his consistent service and deference to traditional values and royal protocols. His descendants inherit not only his bloodline but also his track record of dignity, respect for the institution of the Awujale, and public service-key traits traditionally considered in royal selection.
Introducing technicalities over who is currently "head of house" could create unnecessary conflict or delay in the selection of a new Awujale. By focusing on clear, traceable lineage to a respected and previously recognized head, the kingmakers can maintain focus on unity and continuity, which is critical in times of transition. Denying the descendants of a legitimate and undisputed head of house from 1999-2013 the opportunity to be considered would set a dangerous precedent-effectively penalizing those who served honorably while potentially rewarding factions seeking to rewrite recent history.
During his leadership, Prince Fasasi Adebisi Adeyemi engaged with the kingmakers and other ruling houses in formal and informal capacities. Such longstanding recognition should serve as a moral basis to validate the eligibility of his bloodline for the Awujale stool. Consequently, the current Olori-Ebi of Fushengbuwa, Prince Adedokun Ajidagba has a powerful example to follow in Prince Fasasi in effectively managing the affairs of the ruling house.
