Congratulations to me on a remarkable May! It was a month of tremendous growth, impact, and achievements. I set out to "break barriers for limitless growth," and I'm thrilled to have made significant progress.

I'm proud of my consistency in creating and sharing content on social media, using tools like Canva, Capcut, and Plotagon. Additionally, I took an AI course with AlX, which has already yielded valuable knowledge and skills. I've optimized my LinkedIn profile, learned effective prompting for meaningful content generation, and explored AI applications in nutrition and dietetics.

Despite facing challenges like network glitches, inspiration droughts, low energy, and poor sleep, I persevered and accomplished most of my goals. My husband, Chinedu Enechi, was my rock, offering unwavering support and encouragement. I'm also grateful for the motivation and engagement from my colleagues and online community.

As I step into June, I'm committed to achieving a better balance between work, family time, exercise, and sleep. I aim to write an article based on my Master's thesis, complete my ALX program, and acquire new skills through short courses. I'm excited for the opportunities ahead and acknowledge the Holy Spirit, my husband, colleagues, and online community for their inspiration and support.

Here's to an amazing June! I encourage you to dare to be your authentic self and embrace your originality. Let's make this month count!

4 Sensory Tips to help a PICKY EATER

Children are like sensory explorers when it comes to food. Their acceptance of a dish hinges on a multi-layered experience that combines sight, smell, taste, and touch. Let's delve into how each of these aspects plays a role in making mealtime a fun and enjoyable adventure:

Sight: We Eat With Our Eyes First

Color: Children are naturally drawn to bright, vibrant colors on their plates. Imagine a plate with a rainbow of vegetables or a smiley face made of fruits – it instantly sparks curiosity and makes the food look more inviting.
Shape & Presentation: Cutting food into interesting shapes like stars or animals adds a playful element and makes it more engaging for a child to explore.
Smell: The Allure of Aroma

Pleasant Aromas: The enticing aroma of freshly baked cookies or a plate of steaming moi-moi can trigger the release of saliva, prepping the mouth for a delightful experience. Familiar and pleasant smells can make a child anticipate the taste and feel more willing to try new things.
Unfamiliar Odors: Strong or unfamiliar smells can be off-putting for a child. Introducing new foods slowly and pairing them with familiar aromas can help ease the transition.

Taste: The Sweet Symphony

Basic Tastes: Children naturally gravitate towards sweet flavors, similar to their preference for breast milk. This is because sweetness is often an indicator of a safe and nutritious food source.
Developing Palate: As children explore new foods, their taste preferences expand. Exposing them to a variety of tastes, from salty to sour, helps them develop a more adventurous palate.

Texture: A Tactile Adventure

Comforting Textures: Young children often prefer smooth textures like mashed potatoes or yogurt. These are familiar and easy to manage in their mouths.
Introducing Complexity: As children's chewing skills develop, they can gradually explore more complex textures like crunchy vegetables or chewy pieces of meat. This adds a new dimension to their eating experience and keeps things interesting.

The Synergy of Senses: Making Mealtime Enjoyable

The beauty lies in how these senses work together to create a holistic experience. The vibrant colors of a dish might entice a child to take a bite, while the pleasant aroma heightens their anticipation. The taste then confirms (or challenges) their initial impression, and the texture adds another layer of enjoyment or exploration.

By incorporating these sensory elements into mealtimes, parents and caregivers can turn mealtimes from a struggle into a delightful adventure for children. It's a journey of discovery, with each bite offering a new experience that shapes their future food preferences and fosters a healthy relationship with food.

Prenatal Flavour Exposure and the Development of Taste Preferences in Infants

A baby's sense of taste begins to develop very early on in pregnancy, around 9 weeks. At this time, their mouth and tongue have formed, along with the first tiny taste buds.

The flavours of the food a pregnant woman eats and what she drinks pass through her bloodstream and into the amniotic fluid that surrounds her baby. As the baby swallows this fluid, they are able to taste what have been eaten. This exposure to different flavors helps to develop their taste preferences.

By the time a baby is born, they are able to taste all five basic tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami.

However, their sense of taste is still not fully developed. Newborns have around twice as many taste buds as adults, but they are not as sensitive.

As babies grow and develop, their sense of taste continues to mature. By around 6 months of age, their taste buds are more developed, and they are able to start to appreciate a wider variety of flavors. This is a good time to start introducing solid foods to your baby.

Here's a timeline of a baby's taste development:

☆ 9 weeks: Taste buds begin to develop on the baby's tongue.
☆16 weeks: The baby starts to swallow amniotic fluid, which can beflavouredd by the foods the mother eats.
☆ Birth: The baby is born with a well-developed sense of taste and a preference for sweetflavourss.
☆ 3-6 months: The baby's sense of taste continues to develop, and they start to explore different textures and flavors.
☆ 6 months and older: Babies can be introduced to solid foods and start to develop their own taste preferences.
