Yesterday was World Cancer Day, a global reminder that the fight against cancer is far from over. This year’s theme, "United by Unique," speaks to the reality that while cancer affects us all, every journey is different, and healthcare must reflect individual needs.
In partnership with our long-term partner, Polaris Bank Ltd.., we held a press conference to discuss the reality of cancer in Nigeria, the power of early detection, and the need for a people-centered approach to care.
According to the Global Cancer Observatory (2022), over 127,000 Nigerians were diagnosed with cancer, and nearly 80,000 lost their lives. Among women, breast and cervical cancer are the most common, while among men, prostate and colorectal cancer rank among the top five.
These numbers highlight the urgent need for early detection and accessible screening programs. Studies show that when cancer is caught early, treatment is more effective, and survival rates improve. Addressing Nigeria’s cancer burden requires a combination of public health initiatives, improved healthcare access, and individual lifestyle changes, eating healthy, regular exercise, and routine check-ups.
In these challenging economic times, our CEO, Ebunola Anozie, expressed her gratitude to Mrs Bukola Oluyadi (Group Head Customer Experience Management & Sustainability), Mr. Rasheed Bolarinwa (Group Head Brand Management & Corporate Communications), and the entire Polaris Bank Ltd.. team for ensuring that cost is NOT a barrier by providing free breast cancer screenings.
This Valentine’s season, give yourself the gift of self-care. Visit us on Saturday, February 22nd for a FREE breast cancer screening. Remember, self-love starts with self-care, and your health is the best gift you can give yourself and those who love you. 🫶🏿🤍
