“Christmas is not just a season; it is a reminder that healing goes beyond medicine - it encompasses love, hope, and compassion.”

That message of comfort and renewed hope echoed throughout General Hospital, Ikorodu, as its management team once again demonstrated a commitment to care that reaches far beyond clinical treatment.

A few days before Christmas, the hospital had already begun to transform. Colourful decorations brightened the corridors, and a beautifully lit Christmas tree at the General Outpatient Department instantly lifted the mood of patients, visitors, and staff. It reminded everyone that the spirit of Christmas is a beacon of hope, especially in challenging times.

During the Christmas celebration at the hospital, the Director of the Food and Nutrition Department at the Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr. Oludara Folashade, who represented the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu conveyed the governor's goodwill and his heartfelt message of hope and encouragement.

One of the most heartwarming moments of the day was the arrival of Santa Claus. His presence brought wide smiles and excitement as he moved from ward to ward handing out gifts. For many patients, it was a touching reminder that they were remembered and celebrated despite being away from home for the holidays.

As the event concluded, Dr. Hassan restated the hospital’s unwavering dedication to delivering quality healthcare and ensuring that every patient feels valued. He extended warm Christmas greetings and wished everyone a prosperous New Year filled with renewed health, hope, and happiness.

GENERAL HOSPITAL, IKORODU RALLIES STAKEHOLDERS TO TACKLE BARRIERS TO SAFE DELIVERY

General Hospital, Ikorodu recently convened a multi-sectoral stakeholders’ meeting to address persistent challenges limiting safe delivery and maternal health outcomes across the Ikorodu division. The forum, themed, “Removing the Barriers to Provision of Safe Delivery,” brought together medical professionals, traditional birth attendants, private practitioners, monarchs, community leaders, and representatives of key health players in Lagos State.

Declaring the meeting open, the Medical Director/CEO, Dr. Taiwo Kamorudeen Hassan said the hospital is committed to strengthening its maternal and neonatal care systems. “Our priority is to ensure that no woman loses her life while bringing forth another. We are determined to eliminate every delay, every gap, and every barrier that prevents women from receiving timely, safe, and professional care. Collaboration is our greatest resource, and this meeting shows that all stakeholders are ready to work together, “ he stated.

The Lagos State Health Service Commission (HSC) Board members commended the hospital for initiating the stakeholders' forum. Dr Olumuyiwa Sholanke, Commissioner 1, said, “This hospital is setting a standard. The Commission fully supports initiatives that improve outcomes, enhance efficiency, and put patient safety first.”

Dr Mobolaji Olukoya, Commissioner 2, corroborated these assertions. He said, “This is the kind of leadership we encourage. Safe delivery is a key indicator of a functional health system, and collaborations like this ensure that hospitals deliver on their mandate.” Commissioner 3, Dr. Moyo Adejumo, and Commissioner 4, Dr. (Mrs.) Ololade Fadipe also added their voices to the discourse.

Speaking on the clinical challenges affecting safe delivery, Dr. Mogboruko Stanley, Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the hospital, highlighted the need for early antenatal engagement. “One of the biggest barriers we see is late presentation. We see women arriving when complications have advanced. When antenatal care begins early, when referrals are prompt, we can prevent many emergencies before they escalate.”

Dr. Oluwatobi Folarin, from the Paediatric Department, reflected on the critical hours after birth. He said preventing birth asphyxia, preterm complications, and neonatal infections starts with ensuring the mother receives proper care before and during labour. In his words, “Every safe delivery is a victory not just for the mother, but for the newborn and the hospital."

The Lagos State Chapter of the Association of Traditional Birth Attendants (TBA) was fully represented. The Chairman, Mr. Olusesi Tajudeen Mare said, “Traditional birth attendants remain the first point of contact for many rural women, but we also can not deny the importance of skilled care. This partnership allows us to refer faster, cooperate better, and save more lives."

The Chairman of Association of Nigerian Private Medical Practitioners (ANPMP), Dr. Ewa Bassey referred to healthcare as an ecosystem that works closely with government hospitals and traditional birth attendants.

Royal fathers in Ikorodu added a grassroots dimension. The duo of Olubeshe of Ibeshe, Oba Richard Abayomi Ogunsanya, and the Adeboruwa of Igbogbo, Oba Semiudeen Orimadegun Kasali, commended the hospital for the initiative, while promising to guide the people better and encourage them to seek early care.

A revered religious leader, Alhaji Sheikh Yaya Oshoala, Chief lmam, Oriwu Central Mosque added, “We must stop treating childbirth as a cultural or religious issue. It is a medical process that requires skilled personnel.” He also promised to encourage the communities to embrace professional care.

The stakeholders’ forum concluded with a collective resolution to improving referral systems, boosting antenatal clinic attendance, integrating TBAs more effectively, and expanding community sensitisation on danger signs during pregnancy.

GENERAL HOSPITAL, IKORODU CELEBRATES WORLD ORTHOPAEDIC NURSES DAY WITH FOCUS ON OSTEOARTHRITIS

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease characterised by the breakdown of articular cartilage and underlying bone. It is the most common arthritis that causes pain, stiffness, swelling, and decreased joint mobility.

This definition formed the foundation of discussions as the Orthopaedic Department of General Hospital, Ikorodu celebrated World Orthopaedic Nurses Day 2025, an annual event held on October 30th to create awareness and sensitise the public and the community on the role and importance of orthopaedic nursing in medical practice.

With the theme, "Osteoarthritis, the Nursing Perspective," and a sub-theme, "Teamwork in Orthopaedic Practice in General Hospital, Ikorodu," a scientific conference was held to educate nurses within and outside the hospital on the perception of nursing management in treating osteoarthritis.

The Medical Director/CEO, General Hospital, Ikorodu, Dr. Taiwo Kamorudeen Hassan, in an address delivered at the occasion, appreciated the department for the work they do while also commending Dr. Tunde Oloyede, Consultant and Head of Orthopaedic Department, for the good leadership, team spirit, and cohesion displayed at the department.

The Medical Director also appreciated the Apex Nurse, Mrs. Grace Enibukun, for her support to the department. He equally used the occasion to encourage all other hospitals present to emulate what the Orthopaedic Nurses in General Hospital, Ikorodu have started by celebrating and sensitising people on the management of Osteoarthritis

In a goodwill message, the guest speaker, Mrs. Adebukola Cole, the Director of Nursing Services, Health Service Commission, ably represented by her Assistant (DNS), Ruth Awobajo, said this maiden edition of General Hospital, Ikorodu’s Orthopaedic Nurses Day marks a significant milestone in nurses' collective commitment to improving outcomes in musculoskeletal health. She further explained that the theme, "Osteoarthritis, the Nursing Perspective" is both strategic and relevant, especially at a time when osteoarthritis continues to be one of the most common causes of chronic pain that reduces mobility and causes long-term disability worldwide.

In addition, she said this would also provide a platform for nurses to showcase the vital role orthopaedic nurses play in early detection of pain, its management, counselling, lifestyle modification, and post-surgery care to ensure that patients living with osteoarthritis receive holistic care.

In a presentation delivered by the guest speaker, Mrs. Omolara Ogunwonmoju, the Deputy Director of Nursing Services, Igbobi Orthopaedic Hospital, she highlighted the risk factors of osteoarthritis, which include age, genetics, obesity, joint injury, repeated stress, metabolic diseases, and jobs involving heavy lifting.

She said arthritis can be classified into two: Primary (with no identified causes) and Secondary (associated with age and known causes). These can be managed medically and pharmacologically with therapy, weight loss, exercise, assistive devices such as splints and braces, heat and cold therapy, and joint rest. In severe cases, surgery may be required to reduce pain.

Dr. Tunde Oloyede, the Consultant and Head of Orthopaedic Department, mentioned that teamwork is a vital factor for success in orthopaedic practice, as it encourages patient-centered care and helps overcome challenges when basic principles are applied. He said orthopaedic practice in General Hospital, Ikorodu has improved and evolved over the years.

The Medical Director, Dr. Taiwo Kamorudeen Hassan and all other invited guest speakers, the Apex Nurse, and Dr. Tunde Oloyede were presented with an award of appreciation for the celebration of Orthopaedic Nurses Day.

GENERAL HOSPITAL, IKORODU MARKS YEAR 2025 WORLD RADIOLOGY DAY

At one time or the other, many people might have wondered how doctors see or know what is happening inside the body without surgery. The simple answer lies in the hands of skilled radiographers and radiologists who use advanced imaging technology to diagnose and treat various medical conditions.

General Hospital, Ikorodu’s Radiology Department, recently marked World Radiography Day, an annual celebration held every 8th of November to raise public awareness on the vital role imaging and radiographic procedures play in medical practice.

The Medical Director/CEO, General Hospital, Ikorodu, Dr. Taiwo Kamorudeen Hassan, speaking on the theme of this year’s celebration, “Empowering Health Care through Imaging Excellence,” highlights the evolution of radiographic practice and its significance in diagnosis and treatment. He emphasised the need for continuous professional development and adherence to radiation safety standards.

During a health talk delivered to clients at the General Outpatients Department of the hospital, Mrs. Victoria Francis, a member of the radiology team, emphasised the significance of the profession. She noted that, just like medicine, radiology is an interesting course that every parent should encourage their children to study because it serves as the eye of modern medicine. “Without imaging, doctors in some cases of health issues can not work effectively,” she explained.

Adding her voice to the discourse, Dr. Adenike Ajibola, Principal Medical Officer II, reinforced the indispensable nature of radiology in healthcare delivery. In her words, “As the eye of modern medicine, radiology helps doctors make accurate diagnosis of patients’ conditions. It is a game changer that applies to every area of medical practice.”

Dr. Ajibola pointed out that with more improvement and excellence across all radiological procedures such as ultrasound, X-ray, mammogram, and other imaging techniques, healthcare delivery to patients will improve positively, leading to accurate results for all treatments.

On behalf of the Radiology Department, Dr. Adenike Ajibola expressed profound appreciation to the Medical Director/CEO, Dr. Taiwo Kamorudeen Hassan, for the unwavering support he had given the department to ensure it runs smoothly and meets the needs of patients seeking quality healthcare services.

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT TAKES CENTRE STAGE AS GENERAL HOSPITAL, IKORODU CELEBRATES WORLD ANAESTHESIA DAY

What would you do if someone suddenly collapsed in your home or in a public space? Would you know how to keep them alive before the ambulance arrives? These were the critical questions raised at General Hospital, Ikorodu, during the 2025 World Anaesthesia Day celebration.

World Anaesthesia Day is an annual event that highlights the vital role of Anaesthetists in emergency and critical care. This year's theme, "Anaesthesiology in Health Emergencies," focused attention on a skill every individual should possess – Basic Life Support.

Basic Life Support refers to the critical life-saving techniques that can be performed by anyone to sustain a person's life during cardiac arrest or other medical emergencies before professional help arrives. In a comprehensive presentation delivered by Consultant Anaesthetist, General Hospital, Ikorodu, Dr. Motunrayo Oladimeji, at the General Outpatient Department, she outlined a step-by-step approach to Basic Life Support.

According to her, “These skills can serve as first aid treatment to stabilize people before they get to the hospital. People die because they do not have knowledge of what Basic Life Support can do in emergency situations.” Explaining further, she said, "When a person has cardiac arrest and the heart stops, the first thing is to make sure the area is safe for you and the person. After that, tap and shout the person's name to confirm there is no response.”

“Afterwards, immediately call 112 or 767, which are the Lagos State Emergency Response Team line, to inform them of the incident. Thereafter, chest compressions should begin.”

Dr. Motunrayo Oladimeji demonstrated the technique by placing the heel of the palm on the lower part of the chest bone at the center, locking the other hand on top to form a firm grip, then pressing the chest down 5 to 6 centimeters deep, ensuring the chest returns up (recoils). This should be done 30 times. After the compressions, one should go to the head, place one hand on the forehead and the other at the jaw bone to open the windpipe (airway), then place your mouth on the individual, breathing into him or her two times slowly, making sure the chest is rising.

Dr. Oladimeji added that doing the mouth-to-mouth step is not compulsory because of the spread of diseases. When the mouth-to-mouth step is not used, the chest compressions should be about 100 to 120 times per minute, and this should continue until the victim wakes up or when help arrives.

It is suffice to say that the Anaesthesia Department of General Hospital, Ikorodu, remains committed to educating the community on life-saving techniques that can make the difference between life and death in critical moments.

GENERAL HOSPITAL, IKORODU CELEBRATES WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY WITH INTER-SCHOOL DEBATE COMPETITION

What truly matters more in times of crisis? Access to mental health services or physical health care?
This thought-provoking question formed the crux of discussions as General Hospital, Ikorodu’s Mental Health Department commemorated World Mental Health Day with an exciting inter-school debate competition.

World Mental Health Day, observed globally every 10th of October, is dedicated to educating the public on mental health issues and creating awareness and advocacy against social stigma. The theme for the year 2025 is “Access to Mental Health Service in Emergencies and Catastrophes”, underscoring the critical importance of mental health support during crisis situations.

As part of the activities marking this significant day, three schools participated in a keenly contested debate competition on the motion: “What is more important - to grant access to Mental Health or Physical Health?”

Majidun Senior Secondary School and Kith & Kin Educational School, Ikorodu both spoke against the motion, while Oriwu Model School championed the support for mental health access.

The debate was moderated by the Head of the Mental Health Department, Dr. Adesoji Gbadebo, while the panel of judges, also comprising members of the mental health committee, evaluated each contestant based on appearance, eloquence, time management, and content delivery within the allocated five-minute speaking time.

In his message delivered during the event, Dr. Adesoji Gbadebo, the Head of Department, Mental Health, emphasised that the mental well-being of a person determines the quality of life they live. “Without mental health, there is no life,” he stated.

Dr. Gbadebo clarified that mental health is not solely about disorders but about living life at peak performance - where individuals have the ability to handle stress, remain productive, and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

He highlighted the privilege that residents of Ikorodu have in accessing the Mental Health Unit of General Hospital, Ikorodu, which boasts of a full complement of psychological services. The department’s primary aim is to remain accessible to the community while reminding everyone that early intervention and prevention are key tools in avoiding mental health crises.

Dr. Gbadebo also offered crucial advice to parents, urging them to always create time for their children as they grow. He warned that parents who neglect this responsibility may find themselves in old age homes, where their children will similarly have no time for them.

He further called on teachers and parents to be vigilant and watchful of students who remain indoors, stay quiet at all times, and avoid mixing with others, as such behaviours could signal underlying mental health concerns that require attention.

After an intense and intellectually stimulating contest, the results were announced. Majidun Senior Secondary School emerged as the 2nd runner-up with 83%. Oriwu Senior Model College secured the 1st runner-up position with 84.3%, while Kith & Kin Educational School, Ikorodu emerged victorious with an impressive 84.7%.

Dr. Adesoji, in appreciation and on behalf of General Hospital, Ikorodu, presented token gifts to all contestants, and a victory plaque was awarded to Kith & Kin Educational School, Ikorodu, as the winner of the 2025 inter-school debate competition.

GENERAL HOSPITAL, IKORODU CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL DOCTORS' DAY; HONOURS DOCTORS’ COMMITMENT TO SAVING LIVES

Every year, the world pauses to recognise the invaluable contributions physicians make in ensuring that every individual's wellbeing is a priority. This day of honour, which is the International Doctors' Day, is a day set aside to appreciate the dedication, sacrifice, and tireless efforts of medical doctors, who work day and night to save lives, alleviate suffering, and promote health and wellbeing across the globe.

This year's theme, “Behind the Mask, Who Heals the Doctor?” is a poignant reminder that while doctors dedicate their lives to healing others, they too face challenges that require support, understanding, and care.

In commemoration of this significant day, General Hospital, Ikorodu joined the global community to celebrate its team of dedicated doctors, who have continued to demonstrate exceptional professionalism and commitment to healthcare delivery.

The Hospital's Management Committee, led by the Medical Director/CEO, Dr. Taiwo Kamorudeen Hassan used the occasion not only to honour the doctors but also to address the important question raised by this year’s theme: ‘Who takes care of those who take care of us?’

During the celebration, the Medical Director/CEO, Dr. Taiwo Kamorudeen Hassan acknowledged the enormous responsibilities that doctors carry. He noted that being a doctor goes beyond having medical knowledge. According to him, “It requires compassion, empathy, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to the service of humanity.”

Reflecting further on the theme, Dr. Hassan emphasised that doctors are also human; hence, they equally experience physical exhaustion, emotional stress, and personal challenges. He commended the doctors at General Hospital, Ikorodu, for their professionalism, their dedication to continuous learning, and their commitment to providing quality healthcare to all patients, even in the face of their own personal challenges.

The Director, Clinical Service and Training (DCST), Dr. Lukmon Kareem also used the occasion to remind the public of the sacrifices that doctors make. He noted that doctors often put their own health and family time at risk to attend to patients, doing so with little expectation of recognition or reward. Addressing the theme directly, he stated that healing the healer requires a collective effort from the society, hospital management, colleagues, family members, and patients. He, therefore, called on members of the public to always show appreciation and respect for doctors, to be patient and understanding in their interactions with them, and to partner with them in promoting good health practices within the community.

The management, thereafter, recognised outstanding doctors who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to patient care, medical excellence, and professional development. This honour served as motivation for others to strive for excellence in their medical practice.

The celebration also featured sessions where doctors were encouraged to share their experiences and support for one another, emphasising that behind every mask is a human being who also needs care and compassion. They also pledged to continue to uphold the highest standards of medical ethics and to work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals to ensure that every patient receives the best possible care.

HEALTHY AGEING: GENERAL HOSPITAL, IKORODU SENSITISES COMMUNITY DURING WORLD PHYSIOTHERAPY DAY

How crucial is physiotherapy in ensuring healthy ageing and preventing frailty among the elderly?

Physiotherapy is essential, as it is the branch of healthcare that uses movement, exercise, and manual techniques to restore and maintain physical function. It plays a vital role in improving mobility, reducing pain, and enhancing body balance.

These were the central focus as General Hospital, Ikorodu joined the global community to mark World Physiotherapy Day 2025 with the theme “Healthy Ageing – The Role of Physiotherapy on Physical Activities and Preventing Falls and Frailty.”

The event featured a variety of engaging activities aimed at creating awareness and educating both clients and the wider community. Hospital staff were also not left out, as a Keep Fit Session was organised to demonstrate the benefits of simple exercises in boosting energy, enhancing productivity, and maintaining overall wellness.

The celebration reached its peak with a dinner and award night attended by members of the Hospital Management Committee, staff, and invited guests. The Medical Director/CEO, Dr. Taiwo Kamorudeen Hassan was ably represented by the Director of Clinical Services and Training, Dr. Lukmon Kareem.

In his words while commending the department, Dr. Kareem said, "The physiotherapy department had been up and doing when it comes to ensuring that people keep fit physically, and the elderly live a pain-free life. We celebrate with you today and implore you to keep up the good work."

Outstanding staff and sponsors were honoured at the event while the Medical Director/CEO, Dr. Taiwo Kamorudeen Hassan received the “Innovative Leadership Award”.

Driven by a commitment to serve and fulfil its corporate social responsibility, Famkris Pharmaceutical Resources Ltd. has embarked on a transformative partnership with Lagos Health District II and General Hospital, Ikorodu, to provide free hernia and lump surgery for indigent patients in the Ikorodu community and its environs.

Leading the team from the Lagos Health District II was the Permanent Secretary, Dr. (Mrs.) Ladele, who in her remark emphasised that the outreach targeted only indigent patients. In her words, “Famkris Pharmaceutical Resources Ltd has committed its resources to providing all necessary surgical materials, medications, and post-operative care packages. Lagos Health District II, on the other hand, facilitated community mobilisation, ensuring that the most vulnerable patients were screened and picked, while General Hospital, Ikorodu, under the leadership of its Medical Director/CEO, Dr. Taiwo Kamorudeen Hassan has equipped its operating theatres and allocated specialised medical personnel for the surgeries.”

Speaking during the inception of the medical outreach, the Medical Director/CEO, General Hospital, Ikorodu, Dr. Taiwo Kamorudeen Hassan gave kudos to the Lagos State Government for its transformative healthcare reforms in the state. He disclosed that hernias and lumps are common health issues that require surgical intervention to treat, but which many patients lack access to for their treatment.

“Famkris Pharmaceutical Resources Ltd. has recognised the gap in accessing affordable healthcare; hence, its proactive initiative at partnering with the Lagos Health District II and General Hospital, Ikorodu to ensure that patients receive essential surgical care without cost,” Dr. Taiwo Kamorudeen Hassan stated. While revealing that twenty-five (25) patients would benefit from the first phase of the surgery free of charge, he applauded the sponsors for trusting General Hospital, Ikorodu, to make a success of the outreach.

Over the course of the outreach, dozens of patients received life-changing surgeries. The impact extended beyond the individual patients, as it rippled through their family members. The beneficiaries all attested to the fact that the surgery was successful and at no cost. One of the touching testaments was that of a middle-aged man, Mr. Kazeem Agboola Dawodu, who had a long case of painful hernia. He was full of praises for the sponsors whilst disclosing that he had been given a new lease of life. Another boy with a noticeable lump on his neck was operated on successfully. His parents tagged the sponsors as beacons of hope. They confirmed that the successful removal of the lump would not only improve the boy's physical appearance but would also boost his self-esteem.

The collaborative effort of the sponsors was a testament to their unwavering commitment to improving the quality of healthcare, especially at the grassroots. General Hospital, Ikorodu, in particular, showcased its expertise, reaffirming its role as a leading secondary healthcare provider in Lagos State.
