GENERAL HOSPITAL, IKORODU DESCRIBED GLAUCOMA AS ‘A SILENT THIEF OF SIGHT’

World Glaucoma Week (WGW) is a global event that raises awareness about glaucoma, which is the second leading cause of irreversible blindness in the world. The campaign takes place annually in the second week of March and is always organised by the World Glaucoma Association (WGA) and several healthcare institutions. Year 2025 theme, which is, “Uniting for a Glaucoma-Free World”, focuses on the importance of collaboration in its early detection, timely treatment, and prevention of vision loss.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, affecting millions of people. It is a group of eye diseases that cause damage to the optic nerve, which transmits visual information from the eye to the brain. It is estimated that around 80 million people have glaucoma worldwide. Approximately 50% of the individuals with glaucoma are unaware that they have the disease, and this is because in its early stages, glaucoma is asymptomatic. Owing to its insidious nature, where symptoms come only after significant vision is lost, it is labelled ‘the silent thief of sight’.

General Hospital, Ikorodu, through its Ophthalmology department, has taken the opportunity of World Glaucoma Week to sensitise its patients on the damages caused by glaucoma and the importance of its preventive measures. During the awareness program, patients were educated on the risk factors for glaucoma. This includes family history, age, extended use of corticosteroids, and certain medical conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. They were also informed about the importance of regular eye screenings and early detection of the disease.

Preventive measures for glaucoma were also discussed, which include lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and avoiding physical combat that could affect the eyes, among others. Patients were encouraged to follow their doctor's recommendations for monitoring and treating the condition. According to ADNS Oluremi Joseph, “Early detection is essential because vision loss from glaucoma is permanent. Only by regular, comprehensive eye tests that measure the intraocular pressure, examine the optic nerve as well as test the visual field can we catch glaucoma before significant damage occurs.”

GENERAL HOSPITAL, IKORODU RAISES AWARENESS ON PRETERM BIRTHS DURING WORLD PREMATURITY DAY

Globally, 15 million babies are born prematurely each year, approximately 1 in every 10 babies. However, it should be known that prematurity does not discriminate as it can affect parents of all ages, cultures, backgrounds, sexual orientations, and economic circumstances. Thus, for the families of preterm babies, it can be a very challenging and often life-changing journey that can have a long-lasting impact.

While World Prematurity Day is about informing and educating the wider community, it is also about celebrating the little treasures within our community, who have graduated from the neonatal units to eventually going home with their families. It also honours the little ones that came too early to survive. The theme for the year 2024 celebration is “Access to quality care everywhere!" which calls for universal access to high-quality care for preterm babies, regardless of their birth, circumstances, or location.

General Hospital, Ikorodu recently celebrated this special day with an event dedicated to mothers and their premature babies. The hospital organised a series of activities to raise awareness about prematurity whilst supporting mothers and families affected by this issue. The event began with a special presentation/lectures by healthcare professionals in the persons of Dr. Folarin, Dr. Sh*ttu and Nurse Adeleye, who spoke on the causes and prevention of prematurity as well as how to care for preterm babies.

Following the presentation, a support group session was held for mothers to share their experiences and seek emotional support from one another. The hospital also provided information on available support services for families dealing with prematurity, while mothers were given the opportunity to ask questions and seek advice on how best to care for their preterm babies. In addition, the hospital arranged for a special bonding session between mothers and their premature babies admitted at the neo-natal unit, allowing them to spend quality time together and create lasting memories.

Overall, the World Prematurity Day event was an impactful experience for mothers. By providing support, information, and encouragement, the hospital was able to empower mothers to care for their premature babies and navigate the challenges of prematurity with strength and resilience.

GENERAL HOSPITAL, IKORODU DISPELS MYTH SURROUNDING CONTRACEPTION ON WORLD CONTRACEPTION DAY

Contraception, also known as birth control or, in local parlance, family planning is the use of drugs, devices, or surgery to prevent pregnancy. Contraception allows a woman the full control of her reproductive health while affording her the ability to be an active participant in planning her family. Thus, World Contraception Day is an annual global event observed on September 26th aimed at increasing awareness about contraception and empowering individuals to make informed choices regarding family planning. The theme for year 2024 is, “A Choice for All: Freedom to Plan, Power to Choose”.

This year, the Department of Nursing Services at the General Hospital, Ikorodu, organised a comprehensive celebration in collaboration with the Deep Kumar Tyagi Foundation, Nigeria (DKT), a key producer of contraceptives. The primary objectives of the celebration were to raise awareness about different contraceptive methods, educate the community on the importance of family planning in reducing maternal and infant mortality, promote the accessibility and availability of contraceptives, foster a culture of open discussion regarding reproductive health, and to dispel myths and misconceptions surrounding contraception.

The celebration featured a series of engaging activities designed to fulfil the set objectives of the hospital. For the awareness campaign, leaflets, brochures, and posters covering topics such as the benefits of contraception, myth-busting, and understanding reproductive health were distributed. Interactive workshops were conducted for the hospital staff and community members, highlighting the importance of understanding reproductive choices.

While addressing and welcoming members of staff and clients of the hospital to the event, which was held at the Maternal and Child Care Center of the hospital, ADNS Adetokunbo Adeola emphasised the importance of World Contraception Day in promoting healthier families and reducing maternal and child mortality rates. She gave insightful health talks about the effects of unplanned pregnancies and the significance of family planning while explaining that the use of contraception is not limited to the female gender alone.

Enlightening the attendees further, ADNS Adetokunbo Adeola discussed different contraceptive methods, their effectiveness, and how to choose the right method for individual needs. In her words, “There are different types of contraception. These include barrier methods to keep s***m from fertilizing the egg, hormone methods, intrauterine devices (IUDs), and surgery to close the fallopian tubes in women or close off the two tubes that carry s***m out of the testicles in men.” At the end of the health talks, she encouraged the community to take advantage of the free services available at the hospital.

The representative from Deep Kumar Tyagi Foundation, Nigeria (DKT), Mr David Kayode, emphasised the foundation’s long-standing commitment to reproductive health in Nigeria. In his words, “We are committed to ensuring the availability and access to quality, integrated, and affordable contraceptive services for all eligible women and men, regardless of religion, creed, disability, or geography. We are also poised to provide all adolescents and young people the access to comprehensive and age-appropriate information in order to prevent unintended pregnancies, gender-based violence, STIs, and HIV/AIDS. Afterwards, the company provided a supply of free contraceptives to be distributed to all attendees.

Trained nursing staff gave practical demonstrations on the correct use of contraceptive methods, such as condoms. This ensured that attendees were not only aware of the methods but also knew how to use them correctly. The nurses further conducted consultations to help individuals choose the most suitable contraceptive options for their needs.
Afterwards, attendees had the opportunity to ask questions and receive expert advice on contraceptive options.
