Diastop is an antidiarrheal medicine that contains loperamide hydrochloride as its active ingredient.

Uses of Diastop:

1. Treatment of acute diarrhea – It helps control sudden episodes of non-specific acute diarrhea.

2. Chronic diarrhea – It can be used under medical supervision for chronic diarrhea, for example in conditions like inflammatory bowel disease.

3. Reduction of ileostomy output – It is sometimes used to decrease the amount and frequency of discharge in patients with ileostomies.

How it works:

Loperamide (Diastop) slows down bowel movements by reducing the activity of intestinal muscles. This allows more water and electrolytes to be absorbed from the stool, making it firmer and less frequent.

Important Notes:

It is for symptomatic relief only; it does not cure the underlying cause of diarrhea.

Not recommended for children under 12 years unless prescribed by a doctor.

Should not be used if diarrhea is caused by bacterial infections (like dysentery with blood/mucus) or antibiotic-associated diarrhea, unless advised by a doctor.
