Maternal mortality is unacceptably high. About 287 000 women died during and following pregnancy and childbirth in 2020. Almost 95% of all maternal deaths occurred in low and lower middle-income countries in 2020, and most could have been prevented.

Pre-eclampsia formerly called toxemia is when pregnant women have high blood pressure, protein in their urine, and swelling in their feet and hands. It can range from mild to severe. It usually happens late in pregnancy, though it can come earlier or just after delivery. Pre-eclampsia can lead to eclampsia, a serious condition that can have health risks for mom and baby and in rare cases causes death. If your pre-eclampsia leads to seizures you have eclampsia. The only cure to pre-eclampsia is to give birth. Even after delivery, symptoms of pre-eclampsia can last 6 weeks r more. You can help protect yourself by learning the symptoms of pre-eclampsia and by seeing your doctor for regular prenatal care. Catching pre-eclampsia early may lower the chances of long-term problems for both mom and baby
