Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that causes progressive damage of the optic nerve at the point where it leaves the eye to carry visual information to the brain. Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible loss of vision.
How common is Glaucoma
Over 70-80 million people are blind from glaucoma worldwide. 90-95% of those having the diseases do not know they have not yet been diagnosed with it. It can be considered as an epidemic.
What are the causes/risk factors of glaucoma
No known specific cause but there is numerous risk factors which include…..
High intra ocular (eye) pressure, which is the most common.
Positive family history.
Common at age 40years and above, though affect new born and young ages.
Refractive error.
Black race.
Medical condition such as diabetes and hypertension
Types of glaucoma
Adult onset-primary: open angle
: close angle
_secondary i.e occur as a complication of other visual disorders
Congenital glaucoma occurring in newborn
The commonest one is primary open angle type.
What is the symptom of glaucoma
1. At early stage primary open-angle glaucoma has no symptoms .
2. It causes no pain
3. vision stays normal initially.
4. without treatment, people with glaucoma will slowly lose the peripheral (side) vision. So those who have the disease do not know the disease continues to damage their sight without pain, redness watering, or any at all.
5. As glaucoma remains untreated, people may miss objects to the side and out of the corner of their eye. They seem to be looking through a tunnel.
6. Over time, straight-ahead (central) vision may decrease by blurring until no vision remains.
How is Glaucoma detected
Visual acuity test.
Fundoscopy.
Visual field test.
Tonometry.
Pachymetry.
